Drama News
Henking students have been doing a great job using their drama tools of voice, mind and body to participate in skill building activities for actors. All students started the year demonstrating the connections between the four fine arts and the five senses.
First and Second graders used their skills of observation and concentration to practice mirroring each other.
First graders acted out the story of Caps for Sale by Esphyr Sobodkina. They took turns being the mischievous monkey and the funny peddler. As we got closer to Halloween the first graders acted out the story of Rosa and the Monster Seeds. They used their bodies to transform from a tiny seed into a plant and then showed what might happen if they started as a shiny, purple ‘monster seed’. Students helped to create an alternate ending to this story!
Meanwhile, second graders worked in partner groups to act out the story of a Caveman who sees his reflection for the very first time. They created a way to show a mirror breaking using their bodies. This was very creative work!
Finally, second graders practiced using their drama skill of transformation within a story drama. They transformed their bodies into setting objects in a story called, The Haunted House. They learned about behind the scenes theater jobs and took on crew roles such as ‘light captain’, ‘camera helper’ and ‘sound effects supervisor.’
I look forward to continuing our collaborative and creative work in drama this upcoming trimester!

2022-2023 Kindergarten Registration is Open
Online kindergarten registration for the 2022-2023 school year is open! District 34 will launch full-day kindergarten (FDK) at all of our primary schools. A half-day option remains available.
Thanks to the successful referendum, there is space for all families who wish to select FDK! To learn more about kindergarten in District 34, visit glenview34.org/fdk and watch this video at tinyurl.com/FDKinD34.
Fees
At the November 15 meeting, the D34 Board of Education approved the FDK fee for the 2022-2023 school year. If you register before March 31, 2022, the fee is $3,300; it will automatically be set in 10 equal installments. When you register, you will be asked to make an initial payment of $330; then, nine monthly payments will be set in e~Funds for Schools, the District’s payment processor. The first monthly payment after the deposit will be due by September 1, 2022. You will have the option of making those monthly payments, or you can pay multiple installments at any time. For registrations after March 31, 2022, the FDK fee is $3,600. The early registration rate for half-day kindergarten is $127.
Fee Waivers & Reduced Fees
Families who need financial assistance can apply for an income-based fee waiver. Those who apply must provide proof of income to be considered for free or reduced FDK fees. The reduced fee is $580. The criteria for receiving a fee waiver are the same as the National School Lunch Program.
You can find the waiver application online here.
Full Day or Half Day?
We know that you have questions about what FDK and the half-day experience will look like for your children. The website shares information about FDK, and highlights that FDK includes more time for:
- Learning through play
- Relationships and community building
- Standards-based curriculum
- Family partnerships
The structure of half-day kindergarten will depend on the number of students enrolled. (That is a big reason that we are opening up registration for kindergarten earlier than in previous years.) If enough families wish to enroll their child in half-day kindergarten, the District will offer a dedicated half-day program (either at each school or at one location, depending on the numbers of students enrolled). If there are very few students whose families choose the half-day option, students will attend at their home school, but attend for a half day in the same classroom with full-day classmates.
We encourage families to enroll as soon as possible, so we can begin planning for both full- and half-day kindergarten.
Registration Assistance
Online registration is quick and easy. In-person help will be available at the D34 Admin Building (1401 Greenwood Rd., next to Westbrook) on January 26, February 24 and March 29 from 4:30pm-7:00pm. You also can call 847-998-5063 or email residency@glenview34.org with questions.
