What's Happening in PBS?
Week of December 7th -11th
We are winding down to the end of the semester! This week we are starting of with a lab that evaluates the energy found in food. We will be burning the food on Monday and then doing the calculations that go with them on Tuesday. Wednesday we will be hosting 3 guest speakers that will talk with the kids about what life is like with Diabetes. We will be having a person with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes to share their stories. Their last unit test will be on Thursday that will cover diabetes, diagnosing diabetes, macromolecules, food testing and the energy in food.
To finish out the week on Friday, we will be doing an introduction to osmosis because when we return on Monday, we will be doing our diabetic emergency lab.
As for HOSA this week...we are winding down to the end of the semester. Remember that all students have to earn 50 PD points by participating in HOSA events throughout the semester. Their PD sheets in their binders are updated and they should know how many points they have as of right now. Here is what is offered this week:
- Monday - HOSA State Meeting for those who have signed up with me and are competing next semester
- Wednesday - Biomed Morning (worth 10 PD points) in the band room
- Thursday - Scrubs Dress Day (worth 5 PD points)
The week after there is one more guest speaker for the semester (10 PD points) and another biomed morning (10 PD points) but that will be the last available PD points for the semester. As the kids know, there is an opportunity for extra credit at the end of the semester if they have over the required 50 PD points. I will tell them exactly how much extra credit after they take their final.
Lastly, I just wanted to give you a heads up that we will be having our 2nd annual Holidays with HOSA next week on Thursday, December 17th. It will be from 6-8pm in the Freshman Center Commons. We invite both high school HOSA chapters to come down and celebrate with us and it is a really fun night. We hope to see a lot of Freshman HOSA students there!
