Van Brunt Newsletter

April 2018 Edition

A Note from the Principal

Dear Van Brunt Families,

Welcome Back! I hope everyone enjoyed spring break and took some time to relax and enjoy time with your family. It's hard to believe we are beginning fourth quarter and only have two months left of school! I am so proud of what has been accomplished so far this school year and look forward to finishing strong. Please encourage your child to make the best of this last quarter.

Students in third through sixth grade are working hard to show what they know on the Wisconsin Forward Exam. We are seeing focus and students taking pride in their work. They are taking their time, taking breaks when they need one, and really putting forth their best effort. Our fabulous PTO donated $500 so we could purchase snacks for students during testing.

We are looking forward to a wonderful fourth quarter full of fun and learning. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Lisa Sawyer

TORNADO AND SEVERE WEATHER

It is that time of year when we become increasingly aware of the possibility of severe weather. The week of April 9 – 13 has been designated as Severe Weather Awareness Week. The statewide tornado drill will take place at 1:45 on April 12th. Students at Van Brunt will participate in a drill at this time . Prior to this drill, staff will practice the tornado drill procedure with students. When a tornado warning is issued, all children and school personnel will go to a designated safe area. If the warning is given at dismissal time, we will hold all children at school until the warning has been cancelled or the storm has passed.

Getting to know the Team of the Month

For the month of April, Van Brunt would like to recognize our 2nd grade team, Kris Duhr and Eric Schwendimann. And last but not least our Custodians Andy West, Vicky Plautz, Rita Torres, Josie Hahn, and Lori Stenglein. These individuals make Horicon stronger each day by giving their all to their profession as well as the students and staff at Van Brunt!

Kris Duhr

This is my 18th year of teaching in Horicon. I spent 10 years teaching 1st grade and this is my 8th year in 2nd grade. I love teaching children, getting to know them, and being here for them. I also enjoy my teammate, Mr. Schwendimann. He's helped me be a better teacher and he's super easy to work with. I have made some great friends here throughout my 18 years that I know will be my friends for life. In my free time I enjoy watching my two children play many different sports. I also enjoy reading a good book on a nice warm summer day.

Eric Schwendimann

This is my 11th year teaching for the Horicon School District. I've taught Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade. I like teaching here because of the great staff we have and because the kids love being here to learn. I have been married to my beautiful wife Sarah for 8 years. We have two children Emma 5 and Ryan 3. In my free time I enjoy golfing.

Andy West

I am in my sixteenth year with the Horicon School District. Even though I don't work directly with the kids, I have a lot of interactions with them and get to see their comical sides. I never know what a day will bring so it's nice to have a little change. In my free time I have three old cars and I enjoy working on them. In the summer months I also enjoy cutting my grass, yard work, or just being outside.

Vicki Plautz

I have worked for the school district of Horicon for twenty years. I love the kids and all of their hugs, especially when I walk through the cafeteria. I have been happily married for forty three years and we have 3 children. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my six grandchildren. In the warmer months I like to work in my yard and plant flowers.

Josie Hahn

I am Josephine Hahn, an Asean from the Philippines. I have worked for the School District of Horicon as a Cleaner for almost 10 years. I love working with all of the friendly, lovely, and approachable staff. I play scrabble online during my weekends. It is a good feeling to be part of the team of the month for April.

Jump Rope For Heart

Drum Roll Please......Our students raised $2551.00 for Jump Rope For Heart! Mr. Gutche told us he thinks that is the second highest ever raised. Thanks to all of those who participated. Way to go!!

Go For The Gold Assembly

Our students participated in an energy filled pep rally to get excited about the Forward Exam which is a state standardized test. The theme was Go For The Gold. We want to celebrate all of the learning that has taken place at Van Brunt and encourage students to do their best each and every day!

Reading Blizzard

Students found a comfy place to plop and read until the "reading blizzard" passed through the school. Some students read old favorites, while others tried some challenging words.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MARCH POPS WINNERS!

Our First Graders were recognized in March for their positive behavior during our POPS assembly. Students recognized each other for ways that their classmates make Horicon Stronger.
