Oak Harbor High School | June 2022 Issue
A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Wow, Wildcat Families!
We have reached the final month of the 2021/2022 school year! Though we experienced some formidable challenges as we readjusted to full-time, in-person schooling, those challenges have proven to be worthwhile. So many experiences that typically define “the high school experience” were reintroduced, and our school’s staff have enjoyed and benefited from them just as much as our students have.
In contrast to the 2020/2021 school year, we returned to in-person athletics with fans in the stands. Our student athletes were able to practice, participate, and grow in their chosen sports. Our drama department put on several fantastic public performances. They both entertained and dazzled audiences with their confidence, energy, and dedication to dramatic techniques. We had live musicians– including bands, choirs, and Orchestra Club– at assemblies, during football games, and in their outstanding public performances. Multiple other clubs also produced and presented their work in a variety of forums– both in Oak Harbor and off-island.
Students’ return to in-person demonstrations of their work has been extraordinarily moving for staff who have witnessed the challenges the past two years have forced upon them. Seeing and showcasing our students’ talents, growth, and the results of their hard work has filled us with PRIDE; Our students truly do possess passion, respect, integrity, dedication, and excellence.
As we near the end of the school year, we hope that everyone in our community can share in this sense of pride. This year has presented us all with obstacles– too many to list! However, without the flexibility of students’ guardians, stamina of their educators, and the continued investment of the larger community, our students would not experience the success we are so thrilled to see in them this year. If you have a senior, be sure to regularly check the graduation page on our website for any changes or updates.
We hope that students have the opportunity to reflect on the changes we’ve been through over the past couple of years. From remote school to shortened school weeks, to masked and spaced school days, to the near-normalcy we have been so grateful to experience in the second half of this school year. Students have had to make up for two years’ worth of academic, social, and emotional growth rapidly, and they have risen to the occasion. We hope they take pride in all they have done this year because we certainly do! Go Cats! OHHS Admin Team

Mr. Keller Collaborates with CTE & the Art Department
Our Life Skills class created an OHHS Monopoly! With collaborators from the CTE and the Art Department, the game was developed. The Graphic Design class, with Michael McCauley '22 as a leader, designed the graphics and the board, including drawings from Mr. Christopherson, such as the ISS square depicting Mr. Thomas, our 11th & 12th grade dean. The game pieces were taken on by robotics, where they 3D-printed mini-Chromebooks and books to represent hotels and houses. The board itself was created based off of the different wings of the school, where the properties were different classrooms and areas! Mr. Salisbury was even featured as the monopoly man in the center! Though the students' favorite part about this project was getting out of class, creativity, and wildcat pride was abundant.
