Picture Yourself Growing in First Grade
Seuss Fantastic
To celebrate Read Across America, we also participated in a school wide hallway read! Every student and every adult enjoyed 15 minutes of reading at the same time! What a great way to show our love of reading and model that reading is important and valued in our community! What a great message for young readers!
#MysterySkype
On Friday, we had a FIRST in First Grade! We were able to connect with a class from Aston, PA via Skype! Using Skype, we were able to video conference with this class right through our SCREEN! We talked to the students, saw their classrooms, and met their teachers! It was exciting and amazing!
We connected with this first grade class to play a game of Mystery Number! Mystery Number Skype is a game where both classes pick a mystery number and take turns asking yes or no questions to figure out the mystery number! This game is great for building number sense, reinforcing place value, using math vocabulary (ex. greater than, even and odd), and problem solving! Not to mention, it is really fun meeting a new class and seeing other students in the country and their classrooms. It builds a global awareness as we realize other students are learning the same things that we are and that they are important!
We prepared by thinking about what would make good questions to help us narrow down our hunt for a mystery number. We thought about questions like "Is your number a 2 digit number?" "Does your number have a 5 in the tens place?" "Is your number even?" After brainstorming questions, we practiced using our number grid to help us keep track of all of our clues by crossing out numbers.
We had a GREAT time playing and we can't wait to connect with other classrooms and show off all we know about numbers!

Featured App - Numbers Logic Puzzle
This week and going forward, we are beginning to focus on building our fact power. We want our students to gain confidence and automaticity with recalling basic math facts. During math, one of our favorite choices is using this app Numbers Logic Puzzle. It is a fun, challenging way to practice math facts with sums of ten. The goal is to make 10 and eliminate the colored tiles to move on to the next level. We LOVE this game and we take screen shots of our highest scores!

Reminders and Dates
* This week, I will be sending home a red assessment folder. Please review the assessment, sign the sheet for Unit 5, and RETURN the assessment to school. Thanks for your help!
* Please send your child's snack in a bag separate from his or her lunch. Our lunch boxes head down to the cafeteria in the morning and are not kept in our classroom during the day. This makes unpacking much easier! Thanks for your help!
* Guided Reading - thank you for your support in reading at home. Please read the books that come home with your child at night and return them to school the next day. Many times, we use the books the next day for a follow up activity.
