A Message from Mrs. Katkocin ❤️
Dear Scotland Families,
Happy Monday! I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend! Our Water for Everyone fundraising campaign is in the final stretch, with our culminating event just a few weeks away. Four fifth grade students, Lalina Idriss, Reilly Jackson, Olivia Poletto, and Anna Yang presented to our Board of Education, sharing all of the incredible efforts to raise money for a well. These girls represented Scotland, and were poised and graceful. Congratulations to these girls, the Fifth Grade Student Council, our Fifth grade teachers and all of Scotland for their global contributions to make the world a better place! We are concluding our fundraising efforts with a community-wide, two-mile walk from St. Mary's School to the Cass Gilbert Fountain on Saturday, May 14th at 8:00 am. We hope your family will join us as we walk to bring water to South Sudan. Please see the information below.

Scotland Elementary fifth graders, along with the Boys & Girls Club, will be sponsoring a Little Doctor's Blood Drive at the BCGR on Thursday, May 19th between the hours of 4:00 and 8:30pm.
As a result of not being able to have drives during the height of Covid, blood banks are now running extraordinarily low and need our help!
The reason that this New York Blood Center run blood drive is so special is that the kids are the ambassadors to the drive, spreading the word and working at the actual event to ensure that you are comfortable. Not only that but they, along with a group of adults, will babysit your kids (ages three and up) while you donate.
Please watch this two-minute video, created by three incoming SRMS middle schoolers, which will explain what you should expect. You may also call 1.800.933.BLOOD to inquire about your eligibility.

NOTE: For those who just donated at the very successful drive at RHS several weeks back, please know that enough time will have passed that you will be eligible for this blood drive as well.

As Dr. Da Silva shared in her update to the community on Friday, the COVID-19 Health and Safety Committee continues to meet regularly to review RPS COVID-19 procedures. Beginning May 2, RPS will no longer be offering asymptomatic PCR screening tests in school. We have several thousand rapid antigen home test kits available to RPS families. If you would like test kits, you can obtain them from Mrs. Martire, by emailing her at lmartire@ridgefieldps.net. Also beginning on May 2, RPS will no longer be sending daily COVID-19 case notices via email. Cases will continue to be updated at the RPS COVID-19 tracker on a daily basis. I will continue to email families when there has been a COVID-19 exposure in your child’s classroom.
Wishing you all a wonderful week!
Kind regards,
Jill

Smarter Balanced Assessment: Grades 3-5
As mentioned in a recent communication from Mrs. Cory Gillette, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, our students in Grades 3-5 will complete the state standardized testing this spring. Students in Grades 3-5 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment. In addition, students in Grade 5 will complete the Next Generation Science Standards Assessment. Our students at Scotland Elementary will be completing the testing in May, and they will be following the schedule below.
Testing is scheduled over multiple sessions, but may be scheduled in shorter or longer sessions as appropriate for the students in the school. SBA is untimed for all students, and additional days are incorporated into the schedule to allow for all students to work at their own pace. We ask that you try to avoid scheduling appointments during your child’s testing window so that students can be present during their scheduled assessment periods. Please see the schedules below.
More information about the Smarter Balanced Assessment may be accessed on the Smarter Balanced website at http://www.smarterbalanced.org/ and the NGSS (Gr. 5 only) website at: https://portal.ct.gov/sde/science/science-standards-and-resources
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
PTA After School Enrichment Reminders
The SES PTA After School Enrichment program begins this week for those who have registered.
Mondays: April 18, 25 May 2, 9, 16, 23
Sports Mix, Canvas Art & Ukelele
Wednesdays: April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25
Running & Fitness Club, Canvas Art & Music Video Workshop
A reminder that it is imperative that you sign in to your Dismissal Manager account and indicate that your child will be going to after-school enrichment each Monday of the program. You can go ahead and enter it for all 6 weeks. If for any reason your child is NOT attending or is being picked up by someone other than you, please be sure to go in and update the system.
To ensure all students go home safely, we are tightening up the dismissal procedure for After School Enrichment. Students will be seated with their classes in the cafeteria. Parents must sign out EACH child (siblings need to be signed out individually) with the attendance teacher. Please DO NOT take your child before they have been signed out. Please be PATIENT. The dismissal teacher will move as quickly as possible.
Please make every effort to arrive on time for pick up. The PTA does incur extra dismissal costs for late pick-ups. If you arrive later than 10 min, the PTA will need to charge you a $10 late fee.
