Beacon Bulletin
April 2019
Recap and Forecast
Senior Film Capstone Presentations began and will continue into May. Sophomore Arts Night was a delightful demonstration of the diligence and talent emerging from the 10th grade. 17 Beacon students put their skills to the test and participated in the state SkillsUSA competition, 3 of those students won big!
29 of Beacon's thespians were inducted into the International Thespian Society, in a ceremony that was filled with expressive performances and exciting surprises. Many other thespians also received honors at the ceremony. Founders 8th graders displayed their works of art in the Beacon Gallery at their Visual Arts Gallery Night. Even with all of those events, our student artists still found time to give back by participating in the semi-annual Beacon Blood Drive and Pennies for Patients.
This month, our student artists have made the entire Beacon Community proud of their accomplishments! We look forward to all that April has to bring, and we're sure our students will overcome the challenges that face them during PSAT/SAT and RICAS testing. Bring it on Spring!
Exciting Library News
Founders Academy's Official Library Opening
We are so grateful that Ms. Esty took the time to create the Founders Library, it was a long overdue project!
Ms. Wilner's Inclusive Beacon Library
In March, Ms. Wilner used an educational fundraising platform to seek monetary donations to purchase books in order to start a Beacon library, offering high quality literature that is relevant to our students and their cultural experiences. She raised almost $2000 to make her library dreams a reality. We are so thankful to Ms. Wilner for establishing a diverse and inclusive library for our student artists.
Here is a message of gratitude from her:
I am so honored and grateful to all of you who have donated to make this dream a reality. I honestly didn't know if it was possible, but you made this happen. Because of your donations, our students will get to read books about what it means to grow up while being a POC, a disabled person, a refugee, an immigrant, a person struggling with mental health issues, a member of the LGBTQ community, a survivor of trauma and abuse, and just a confused high schooler trying to put it all together. These stories matter -- these are the stories of our students -- and I cannot wait for them to get started.
With gratitude,
Ms. Willner

#BeaconBrag Beacon Students Place at State SkillsUSA Competition
At the Annual SkillsUSA Competition over one thousand students from Rhode Island showcased their technical and vocational skills competing in categories ranging from Action Skills to Welding Sculpture. Seventeen of those students competed on behalf of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts under the supervision of their dedicated advisor Jade Illum, Beacon’s Culinary Arts teacher.
THREE Beacon students placed in their individual competitions.
- 11th grader Aidan Piekarski, won First Place Gold in Related Technical Math and will go on to compete nationally in Louisville Kentucky at the end of June.
- 10th grader Evelyn Albrecht won Second Place Silver in T-Shirt Design.
- Lastly, 10th grader Naomi Jeter won Third Place Bronze in Prepared Speech.
These students worked tirelessly to refine and perfect their skills in preparation for competition. These awards were well-deserved. The entire Beacon Community would like to commend their efforts and congratulate these hard-working students for these fantastic accomplishments.

Reminder: Day Off for 9th and 12th Graders

Of course, seniors who are preparing their films for Capstone Film presentations will be welcome to come to school promptly at 8am.
SAT and PSAT Testing for 10th and 11th Graders
All students are expected to test and be in attendance for this. It will be a half day. Students will be dismissed at the conclusion of testing, which should be by 12noon.
