"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - Each morning as we get the day started next week at HES we will be listening to "The Water Music" Suite #2 by George Frederic Handle.
Water Music – suite number 2 – George Frederick Handel.
George Frederick Handel, who lived from 1685 to 1759, was originally from Germany, but he emigrated to Great Britain to work for the King of England – George 1. During this time, most musicians earned their living by working for someone who was part of a very wealthy family.
During his time working for the king, he wrote a lot of music for the celebrations that took place.
The music this week is called “The Water Music” and was written to be played when the king was going down the river in London, watched by the people on the river bank.
The king was in one boat, and the orchestra in another boat next to the king.
The music is a suite, or collection of short pieces of music, that was based on the dances of the time.
The question this week is:
What is the name of the river that runs through London?
Two bubbles/water drops for a correct answer.
The answer to last week’s question is:
Beethoven wrote nine (9) symphonies.

Harwich Fire Dept. provided our 3rd and 4th grade students an interactive fire education learning experience utilizing one of the regions fire safety trailers!
Letter to staff:
The Harwich Fire Department would like to offer a unique and interactive fire education opportunity for your students. Next week the Harwich Fire Department has secured our regions fire safety trailer. These trailers purchased through the Executive Office of Public Safety through the Department of Fire Services are designed to augment our public fire and life safety education programs.
The trailer offers practical hands-on activities to reinforce the fire and life safety lessons students have learned. The fun, make-believe exercises prepare children to react safely and appropriately in case of an actual emergency. Having the children demonstrate how to react when a smoke alarm sounds or when they see smoke or fire can be used as an evaluation instrument to assess their understanding of concepts and behaviors which have been taught by firefighters and their teachers in the classroom.
This educational tool is used to teach fire prevention and fire survival in an interactive manner. It is equipped with a living room, kitchen, bedroom and control room. The living room has an electric fireplace, bench seating, a telephone and an exit door. The kitchen, where most home fires occur, is equipped with a sink, stove and cabinets. The bedroom is furnished with a small bed, a smoke detector and a sliding door that opens onto a porch with an escape ladder.
In the control room, firefighters can operate a theatrical fog machine to "smoke" one or all rooms in the house. Children are instructed to "crawl low beneath the smoke" as they exit to safety. Along the way they check the bedroom door for heat with the back of their hand. If the door feels warm they use their second way out and descend the fire escape ladder. Once safely outside they proceed to the meeting place. The phone system can be used to simulate a 9-1-1 emergency call to a dispatch center. Children are instructed to give their name, the address and type of emergency and to stay on the phone until they are told to hang up.
I have included below the overview of the Third Grade Evaluation Tool that was given to students this year. Specific concepts under each general category have also been determined and will be helpful in planning for next year. Thank you again to the third grade teachers for your assistance with the evaluation. We look forward to meeting with you and your students for this fun interactive educational opportunity! Please contact me with any questions or suggestions
Thank you!
