What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Reminders
- Please check your child's planner to monitor their behavior chart. Many kids have received letters this quarter. We are seeing many are due to classroom behaviors. If you see a B, it is most likely due to disturbing the learning process. You can talk with your child as to why they may have certain letters.
- When going through your child's trapper, make sure they are with you and are not throwing away important paperwork.
- Daily Homework includes: Reading and Reflex Math
Math
Students are continuing to work through Math at their own pace. Please have a conversation about which topic your student is currently on, and help support them in their learning capacity. The following topics are currently being worked on:
Topic 7: Use Equivalent Fractions to Add and Subtract Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Topic 8: Apply Understanding of Multiplication to Multiply Fractions
Topic 9: Apply Understanding of Division to Divide Fractions
Topic 10: Finding Volume

ELA
Our final unit is figurative language. We will be covering similes, metaphors, alliteration, idioms, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia. This is a fun and entertaining unit that is perfect to end the year with. I am so impressed with how the students have developed as critical thinkers. Their hard work shows in the work they are generating this quarter. As you talk with your kids, encourage them to explain their thinking, not just answer a question. This has such benefits in their communication skills.
Remember to have your child read every night. Their homework expectation is that they do read and meet their AR goal. Many of the kids have met their goals already and that is greatly due to your support in their learning. If your child is just not there yet, gentle reminders may help with this. Our last day for AR will be May 24th.
In writing, we just completed and presented all of their feature articles. Wow, I was impressed!! The growth is great! A couple of notes moving forward to sixth grade. First they need to really think before submitting a writing piece that they have checked for convention issues such as capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. These simple details really make an impact. By you checking this and talking about it, it will benefit them tremendously. Second is plagiarism. We hit on this this year and it will be hit on the remaining school years. I have told them many times that doing this will have a terrible effect on their grades and schooling. Though many worked on this and tried hard to paraphrase, I know many still gathered others' words as their own. Hearing it often will help them to understand.

Social Studies
We are currently halfway into our government unit. Though it may not be their favorite, they do seem to be interested and learning. I am hoping to complete this unit by May 22nd. This will be our final assessment, but we will hopefully do a study on the Civil War before ending the school year. I do hope my passion for history has passed onto the students a little this year.
