Cell Structure

Nucleus

The nucleus controls all functions in the Cell. It also contains all genetic information that is passed from cell to cell. It is found in both plant and animal cells.

Nucleolus

The Nucleolus produces RNA and decides what type of cell its going to be. It also builds and contains proteins and nucleic acid. It is found in both plant and animal cells.

Nuclear Envelope

The Nuclear Envelope is a double membrane that separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm. It is found in both animal and plant cells.

Rough ER

The Rough ER's job is to synthesis proteins in the cells. It is found in both plant and animal cells.

Smooth ER

The Rough ER's job is to synthesis the lipids in the cells. It is found in both plant and animal cells.

Mitochondria

Found in cells needing energy. They produce the ATP (Cell Energy). They are found in both animal and plant cells.

Golgi Apparatus

Modifies and packages proteins for distribution. The Golgi is found in the animal and plant cells.

Ribosomes

Their job is to produce protein. They can be found attached to the ER or floating around in the cytoplasm. Ribosomes are in animal and plant cells.

Chloroplast

The chloroplast captures solar energy and produces glucose. This is how plants achieve photosynthesis. It is only found in plant cells.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cell Membrane

The cell membrane is a barrier that helps maintain the cell's shape and protect from harmful substances. It controls what enters and exits a cell. The cell membrane is found in both plant and animal cells.

Cilia

Cilia are whip like projections from cells. They are short and move stiffly. Cilia help the cell to move around. They are found in animal cells.

Flagella

Similar to Cilia, they are whip like projections from cells. They move "snake like" and help to move the cell around. They are found in both plant and animal cells.

Cell Wall

Similar to the cell membrane, the cell wall shapes, supports, and protects the cell. However, the cell wall is only found in plant cells.

Centrioles

Forms spindle fibers to separate cells during mitosis and meiosis. It is only found in animal cells.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cytoskeleton

Maintains cell shape and assists organelles moving within the cell. They are found in both plant and animal cells.

Peroxisome

An organelle that is found in cytoplasm that breaks down hydrogen into harmless products and are found in animal as well as plant cells.

Lysosome

Lysosomes act as the cells waste disposal system and are used to digest macromolocules. Lysosomes and Peroxisomes are very similar. They are only found in animal cells.

Vacuole

The Vacuole stores mostly water and necessary cell products. They are found in both types of cells but are different shapes.
