Consumer Math
The year is drawing to a close quickly. In the Consumer Math classes students are working on Building A Home Of Your Own and trying to sell the houses they build. Throughout the year they have learned how to keep and balance a checkbook. They reviewed how to write a resume and cover letter for a job and then applied for jobs. Next they went through a program in that job, living out on their own paying bills and dealing with life situations. Students researched cars they could afford and learned about car insurance and what adequate coverage they needed for their cars. Students also learned how to create a budget, about filing taxes and reviewed basic mathematics that a consumer would use out in the real world.
Many of the students completed a personal finance program called Everfi. This package touched on savings, banking, payment types, credit scores, higher education financing, renting vs owning a home, insurances and taxes, consumer protection, and investing. The students who completed the Everfi program will be receiving a Personal Finance certificate. I think it has been a good year of learning for them and I am hoping they will have some good information now as they go out into the world and begin living their lives.
