Mental Health Videos Presented by ISBE Student Advisory Council

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and the Illinois State Board of Education's Student Advisory Council is helping to increase awareness of mental health by breaking down key terminology in a series of videos.

Understanding issues related to mental health and well-being is the first step to providing or finding the support that’s needed. Watch and share the videos to hear from students about issues that affect how they show up to school and their readiness to learn, including: anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, stress, adverse childhood experiences or ACES, mental wellness, physical abuse, mental illness, and mental health.

Thank you to the Student Advisory Council for sharing these videos for families and for kids throughout the state.

Mr. Depalo honored at Hadley Band Concert

Mr. James DePalo, retired Hadley Band Director, was honored at the 8th Grade Spring Band Concert. Mr. DePalo was set to retire at the end of the 2019-2020 school year when all school districts were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures. Any retiring teacher has a full year of “lasts” – their last festival performance, their last band concert etc. Mr. DePalo never had the opportunity to have his last band concert, so current Hadley Band Directors Mrs. Tribley and Mr. Cooper recreated that opportunity with his last class of 6th graders (now graduating 8th graders) and many alumni who have continued their musical studies at Glenbard West. "Mr. DePalo's impact and legacy on District 41 and Hadley Jr. High School is still abundantly clear," said Mrs. Tribley, "as evidenced by the many alumni who returned to pay tribute to him as an educator." Congratulations to Mr. DePalo. Thank you for all the ways you have enriched the lives of staff, students and the Hadley school music program!

Senior Parade at Abraham Lincoln

On May 23rd, graduates of Glenbard West were invited to parade outside of Lincoln School in their cap and gown, while teachers and students cheered them on. The event which had been called "Halls of Honor" in the past, took place outside on the school grounds. Students made posters, smiled, cheered and clapped while the new West graduates proudly circled the building and were then greeted by past teachers and staff for a small reception.

Spanish Summer Camp Reminder

District 41 is so excited to be able to offer Spanish Summer Camp again this year. Spanish Camp is scheduled for July 11-15, 2022 at Benjamin Franklin Elementary, 350 Bryant Ave. The camp is designed to provide practice in Spanish and develop knowledge about cultures of some Spanish-speaking countries. Parent Access to Securly - The D41 Student Online Safety System

Safety of students is our number one priority and that includes internet safety. Many District 41 students will be in the possession of district technology over summer break. As a way to help families monitor devices and keep children safe online, the district provides parents access to the student safety management system called Securly.
Securly is installed on all district issued devices. This is the same monitoring system we use during the school year. Over summer break, Securly will continue to monitor the devices and notify parents of content that could be of concern.

- District 41 adds all parent emails that we have on file in the Skyward database into
Securly.
- Parents will receive a welcome email from Securly.
- District 41 updates any parent email changes or additions from Skyward each week
on Thursday afternoons.
- Parents will receive weekly email reports on Monday's from Securly. The reports will
contain only information about at-home activities.

Please CLICK HERE to visit the FAQ page about the Securly Parent Portal.

Please continue to talk with your children about internet safety and monitor their technology usage at home. Thank you for partnering with us to keep students safe and responsible while online this summer.

NOTE: If you need help with your Securly account or want to learn more about Securly please look at this article. Remember, parents and students seeking technology support can enter a ticket at our D41 Support Center here (directions). Also note, our safeguards will remain in place, but with students and staff not in the buildings over the summer we will not be actively monitoring all alerts from Securly.

New Illinois Tax Holiday for School Families and Educators

For teachers and parents alike, buying school necessities can get expensive. As part of the Illinois state budget that begins July 1, parents, students and teachers will get 10 days to purchase school supplies while paying less in sales taxes. The state’s sales tax is from 6.25% to 1.25% on clothes and school supplies.

Jason Leahy, executive director of the Illinois Principals Association, said the tax holiday will hopefully help out parents as they get their kids ready for another school year.

The tax holiday will take place Aug. 5-15.
