Staley Band Carnival
You're invited!
If you have marked band #1 on the course card the next step is trying the instruments to see what your child could be successful on. You are enrolled in band as there is no 'cap' on space, but they cannot finalize your child's schedule until we get a chance to place them. With eleven instrument choices we know there is a perfect choice for your student!
If your child marked band #2 on the course card you are not currently enrolled in band, but they asked that we email you as we have had some students change their mind in the past. As I mentioned above, the carnival dates are the best time to try the instruments and ANYONE is welcome to come even if they are not currently enrolled in band! If your child tries an instrument and decides they want to do band this will allow us to place them in the correct class as soon as you contact the counselors.
Finally, as we have been telling the students- it is never too late to get into band! The process of changing your child's schedule this early in the process is simply contacting our counselors (emails listed below) and letting them know that you want your child in band! For your convenience we will also have a form you can sign at our instrument carnival. If you have any questions please let us know.
We look forward to meeting you at the Staley Band Carnival!
How an instrument carnival works
Arrival: Please arrive at the time you sign up for- no need to arrive early! Enter in the middle of the building as we will have greeters who will help you get started.
Screening Process: We will have separate rooms for you to visit and work one-on-one with an FISD music teacher. The Staley Band staff will be at the check out table, so our director friends will be helping us see everyone! You can try them all or just a handful. We encourage everyone to try at least one woodwind, one brass, and percussion.
Woodwind Rooms: The rooms are 1) Flute, 2) Oboe/Bassoon, 3) Clarinet, 4) Saxophone. Visit each room if you want to try the instrument listed.
Brass Rooms: The rooms are identical and will have Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. There is no need to visit more than one brass room as the directors will have the same instruments in each room.
Percussion Rooms: Depending on your future high school, either visit the MHS percussion or FHS percussion room. Since our percussion audition is usually one of our most popular choices this will help us choose evenly from our elementary feeders. ROGERS and NEWMAN should visit the MHS percussion room. BRIGHT, CHRISTIE, and any other elementary school should visit the FHS percussion room.
Check Out: After your child is finished visiting the rooms you are ready to check out! Mr. Wood and Ms. Hoffman will help discuss your results and give you additional information for next year. Our goal is to have your instrument chosen when you walk out the door!
Counselors: We will contact the counselors to let them know what instrument your child is playing. Until we do so they will place your child in a generic 'Beginning Band' class that does not have a period assignment. We cannot stress enough the importance of coming to one of our carnival dates if your child marked band as their #1 choice!
