WHS Newsletter
Spring 1 (4/26/23)
A Message from the Principal
Dear WHS Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you doing well and enjoying the typical New England Spring weather. The safety--emotional and physical-- of all members of our school community is a top priority. Every single day, administrators, teachers, staff, and students play a critical role in ensuring that our high school remains a safe learning environment. To help keep our building and the individuals in it safe and secure, it is necessary to remind all members of important safety considerations:
- Be Alert: do not prop open doors, be aware of surroundings, and potentially dangerous activity
- Report Threats: report threats of any kind to a staff member or adult; a threat is someone or something that could cause harm or trouble
- Follow directions at all times: teachers and staff go through a review of our school’s safety and security protocols; teachers and staff are the best resources in the event of an emergency at school
The consequences of any action that compromises the safety of our building or school community can be extremely costly in many ways, of course. Please continue to encourage your child to take their personal safety and school security seriously.
In ongoing attempts to keep our school safe throughout the year, we have conducted or will conduct, safety training and security checks involving personnel from Westborough Police, Westborough Fire, Massachusetts State Police, K-9 officers, and Emergency Medical Technicians.
This time of year always represents a sense of renewal and positive energy, likely because of the numerous activities that fill our daily schedules. It is my hope you can make time to attend some of these events, and safely enjoy them.
Enjoy this version of the newsletter that shares many interesting and worthwhile community activities.
Happy Spring,
Brian Callaghan
WHS Principal

This is an important reminder that all students who are 16 years old and in 11th grade are required to receive a second dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). 1 dose is acceptable if it is given on or after the 16th birthday. If your student has recently turned 16 years old, please make arrangements to have this done by your child’s health provider as soon as possible.

Teen Mental Health Event - May 6th @ WHS 2 - 4 PM
Teen Mental Initiative (TMHI) is hosting a free community event ‘Mental Health in Teens: Recognize, Respond, and Resolve’ in the Westborough High School, MA auditorium, on May 6th, 2023, from 2-4 pm. This interactive workshop for parents and teens will focus on:
• Teen mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, and depression

• How they can find helpful resources to understand them better
• And what can be some of the right steps to start addressing these issues
The event will feature an interactive panel with leading mental health experts. It will be streamed live and will be viewable across the nation.
I am emailing to ask on behalf of TMHI if you can email information about this seminar to our students and their families. We have started advertising in our community as well as in other towns but would appreciate your help in pushing this knowledge forward to our school.

Westborough Ed Foundation Gratitude Garden
Westborough Education Foundation invites you to show your appreciation for the talents and efforts of our dedicated Westborough educators by purchasing a pinwheel flower in their name. Our teachers and staff continually strive for excellence and innovation. Let us recognize and thank them for their work. The pinwheel garden will be planted by WEF volunteers at each school during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8-12, 2023.
To plant a pinwheel flower in your teacher’s name, visit the Westborough Education Foundation (WEF) webpage and make a donation of $5 per pinwheel. You will be asked to name your teacher and school. You may also print (from the emailed receipt) a notecard to personalize and give to your teacher. WEF will send each teacher honored an acknowledgment of the flowers planted for them along with who purchased them.
You may purchase as many pinwheels as you would like. Let’s see which school’s Gratitude Garden will grow the largest. Pinwheel flowers can be purchased up to May 5. They will be planted and growing from May 7 through May 13.
