October Highlights
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN KINDERGARTEN
Reading Workshop
We will be discussing sequence of our stories and identifying the beginning, middle, and ending. As an outgrowth of discussing sequence, we will be looking at characters, plot, and setting of our stories. We will do this using the Five Finger Method. We will also be reading non-fiction books and talking about their characteristics.
Writing Workshop
We will be writing like scientists, closely observing the things around us. We will be looking at and describing things in nature, our classroom, our school, and even each other! Writers write about what they know and we are looking forward to having the children share their knowledge.
Math
We will continue with number recognition and practice writing numbers. We will be working with tally marks, number lines, and putting numbers in order.
Word Study
We will continue to practice our lower case letters and identifying letter sounds we hear in the words we read and write. We will also focus on sentence structure and word syllables.
Social Studies
We will start to look at community helpers as we talk about what it means to be part of a community. This will be reinforced by our trip to the firehouse.
October Fun
Of course October means Halloween and Halloween is a BIG event in kindergarten! We will be doing a myriad of activities with a Halloween theme.
