Principal's Message
Happy 2020! We were so happy to see our awesome Alcova Falcons back at school this week. I hope all of you had an amazing break. The students worked so hard first semester, and quickly set their goals for the 2020 semester. Great things are happening all throughout our building and community. I am so thankful for all of you and your commitment to creating a school we love!
We have some new things happening at Alcova. Students have the opportunity to always gain Falcon Feathers for exhibiting great behavior according to the SOAR matrix. We have added rewards such as Popcorn Fridays twice a month, Falcon Flyer School Store daily, and continuing with our Paloozas. We have also added a School-Wide Management Plan to support students with making the right choices. The purpose of the School-Wide Management Plan is to help consistently manage classroom disruptions and improve student engagement. It allows the focus to stay on teaching and learning. Teachers will continue to implement their classroom management plan. However, when behaviors continue to persist, we have established a school-wide plan to help teach accountability for student actions and keep parents involved in the process. We are proud of our students and look forward to working hand in hand with parents to ensure we have the BEST learning environment possible.
THANK you for allowing me to serve you, your family, this school, and our community as the Alcova Elementary School principal. I love this school and all the people that make us what we are... a community where we Lead, Learn and Succeed!
Your Proud Principal,
Cortina Harris

From our Counselors...
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, school counselors are required to present annual personal safety lessons designed to prevent sexual abuse. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role playing and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from abuse and exploitation. A committee of professional school counselors reviewed the program and selected components that were developmentally appropriate for elementary students and developed lessons around those concepts.
Due to the importance of this topic, I want you to know when and how you may preview the materials and when the counselors will be presenting this information to your child's class. To preview materials, please contact the school counselor for an appointment at 678-376-8500.. Previews end Dec. 20th. During the months of January and February our school counselors will offer the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-5 students.
The following key concepts will be taught at each grade level: each grade reviews what was learned in the previous grade(s) and then learns additional lures or tricks. Please see the specifics below.
(Opt-out) Please write a hand written note if you DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE in the Sexual Abuse Prevention Lessons.
Unless written documentation is received, your child will participate in the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons.
