Lost & Found Will Be Donated

As a reminder, unclaimed items in our Lost & Found are donated at the end of each semester. If your student has returned home without a lunchbox, coat, hat, gloves, etc., please have them peruse our Lost & Found area by the cafeteria before it's too late.

How can you help to cut back on the number of items down there? If names are written on lunchboxes and coats we are able to easily return them to their owners.

This ever growing wall reminds staff, students, and visitors there is so much to be thankful for each day. The BSE Staff is thankful to support learners and watch them grow each day. We are thankful for the support from families as we work together as a team. Examples include:

  • Students arriving on time for school.
  • Open communication between families and teachers.
  • Encouragement for all children to read each night.
  • Positive words letting children know they can do it!

With two weeks to go before Winter Break, the learning is in full force! Writing, reading, math, inquiry, and so much more!

Student Learning & Success!

NWEA Testing

Students in Kindergarten through fourth grade will be taking the NWEA Map Growth tests in reading and math. This year all students will also take it again in the spring. Once the testing window closes, electronic reports will be sent to parents in January.

In addition, the following information was sent to all kindergarten-2nd grade families via a Skylert last week.

North West Educational Assessment (NWEA) testing is administered three times per year for all K-8 HSE students. During the months of December and January, the winter NWEA testing assesses student skills and provides actionable data for Reading and Mathematics. Our teachers, administrators, and support staff observe students daily to understand individual achievement and growth. NWEA is another tool to understand and approach learners in what they have learned and what they are ready to learn. Classroom performance and NWEA results provide the data and resources to deliver effective instruction for all students to grow. This winter window of testing will also be used in part to identify students in need of high ability services. Students may also be identified for high ability services during the spring window of testing in May. More information about identification for high ability services can be found on the HSE Schools website.

New for 2021, NWEA has developed an extension to our typical reading assessment for grades K-2. This winter, students will test as noted below.

  • December 1-17 NWEA Oral Reading Fluency and Dyslexia Screener for grade K-2
  • December 1-17 NWEA Reading and Math Growth Testing for grades K-8
  • Testing could potentially extend into January if necessary

*NWEA has a modified assessment for second grade students who score at or under grade level benchmark. Your student’s report may reflect that modification.

Please know quarantines, absences and retests may affect individual classroom schedules and push testing into January. Reports from NWEA to share student growth targets and percentile performance will be sent home in January once all testing and make-up testing is completed.

BSE had a blast celebrating!

On Thursday, November 23rd, staff and students joined in some fun and laughter as Mrs. Kussy, the Dino, and Mr. Hoog on his scooter joined lunchtime in the cafeteria with all kindergarten through fourth grades. Thanks to the amazing support of families and the community, BSE surpassed the goal of raising $20,000 for the school. Mr. Hoog and Mrs. Kussy dressed up and got rolling! Big laughs, great times, and lots of cheering!
