Digital Citizenship -
In the past, we thought of our community as simply the people and places in our local area; the near-by homes, businesses, and public spaces populated by our neighbors. Our interactions were typically in real-time and face-to-face. Now, not only do we live in these local communities, but we are also members of a larger, global community when we connect online.
There are countless positive things we can do online, however, just like in any neighborhood, there can be dangers. Teaching our children how to avoid and handle these dangers when they arise is important.
Seventeen high school students from the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum visited our elementary schools this week to discuss digital citizenship and online safety. They posed many “What would you do?” scenarios to allow third and fourth grade students to practice reacting to these potentially upsetting or dangerous situations. They focused on four rules of internet safety:
I will tell my trusted adult if anything makes me feel sad, scared, or confused.
I will ask my trusted adult before sharing information like my name, address, and phone number.
I won’t meet face to face with anyone from the internet.
I will always use good internet etiquette and not be rude or mean online.
Students are encouraged to continue this important conversation with their families. More information, including games and videos, can be found at www.netsmartzkids.org.
Thank you to all who participated and made this important learning opportunity possible!
