Have Only Positive Expectations
3 Questions...
The hope is that these questions can apply to all age levels and people within education but why these three questions?
The first one is to celebrate your strengths. If we focus only on what went wrong or didn’t go well our confidence can be destroyed. Always start with strengths. Always.
The second one is to remind us that we can grow. All of us. Myself included.
The third one is meant to lead to action. We can look back, but action helps us move forward.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that your action moving forward will lead to better results in the immediate future, but inaction guarantees nothing will happen at all. If it doesn’t work, go back, reflect, retry, repeat.
Whether it is a reflection on what we learn from others or what we learn about ourselves, what we do with what we have learned is what moves us into the future. Standing still while the world moves ahead only ensures we are falling behind.
What will you do with what you have learned?
Classroom Spelling Bee's Should Be This Week
McAdenville Spelling Bee Before Christmas Break
■ Gaston County Schools Spelling Bee
This year, we are hosting our own “Gaston County Schools Spelling Bee” on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 9:15 a.m. at Stuart W. Cramer High School.
Classroom BEEs need to held immediately so that the school be can be held before the holiday.
Mrs. Marett will email you details shortly.
■ Why are we having a separate spelling bee for Gaston County Schools?
It has been quite a few years since a public school student won The Gazette Spelling Bee.
As we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, we want to ensure that Gaston County Schools has a spelling bee champion who we can promote during our anniversary celebration. With input from the Principals Leadership Team, we decided to name an elementary champion and a middle school champion for Gaston County Schools.
Having our own spelling bee will give our students an opportunity to practice what it is like to participate in The Gazette Spelling Bee. We believe this will help our students as they compete against private, charter, and homeschool students. Plus, with schools having to complete the school-level bees prior to the holiday break, our school champions will have more time to prepare for The Gazette Spelling Bee.
Knowing that our students will win our spelling bee, we will be able to record the program for broadcast on Channel 21 and posting on the school district website and social media.
We are working on a nice prize package for the Gaston County Schools Spelling Bee. It is important to stress to your students and parents that only the winner of The Gaston Gazette Spelling Bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

mClass TRC Resource Update
Several weeks ago we asked that you hold off using TRC question stems until you received further directions. Since that time our ELA team has learned that DPI will not approve oral or written comprehension question stems based on TRC because they limit students from fully understanding the depth of the standards.
Based on this information and the review of documents used in the past we recommend classroom and literacy teachers rely on standards and DOK (Depth of Knowledge) question stems to support instructional planning.
Please reach out to our Content Teacher if you have any additional questions or concerns moving forward.

Teacher - Student relationships
How can we change the tone of how we address students? It’s not what you say sometimes it’s how you say it. Model what they expect. The modeling sessions may have to be repeated a number of times, but model the expectations (Behavior and Instruction) with grace and respect for the student.
