Monday Matters Begins in 2021
In January, Salem Community School started a program called Every Monday Matters. Each month there is a theme and there are announcements and activities surrounding the theme.
January: Optimism
February: Caring
March: Resiliency
Students were recently challenged to make a difference and this was the Monday announcement:
The Starfish Story
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked him what he was doing.
The boy replied that he was throwing starfish back into the ocean. “The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
The man said to him, “Don’t you realize that there are miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t possibly think you can throw them all back into the ocean.”
The boy told him he knew he couldn’t throw them all back but, as he picked up a starfish and threw it into the ocean, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
