JROB DUGOUT NEWS - 2/26 - 3/2
#memorablemeaningfulmeasurable
A collective community that is mutually invested in the well being of our JROB Dolphins
Like many members of our community, I have been thinking about the horrific school shooting in Parkland, Florida. I have experienced anger over the accessibility of guns, sadness for the families that lost loved ones and at times concerns for our own safety. Yet, in the midst of all these thoughts, I have mostly thought about how we as educators have to respond to students and community members (who are also angry-sad-concerned) with a message of security and hope. It is absolutely important that we remember that in the wake of tragedy, we can become the solution or become part of the chaos. I wholeheartedly believe that each of us will choose to be part of the solution.
Instilling hope and security amongst our students will go a long way in successfully shaping little hearts to become contributors to a larger community. Being part of the solution also means that it is up to each of us to watch for patterns of love and loneliness. What makes our happiest kids happy? What makes our loneliest kids lonely, and how do we, as adults of our school help build connections for preventing a pattern of disconnect? I look forward to our continued conversations, and remain hopeful that we will continue to mold sharp minds and more importantly mold leaders who are kind and brave. Our country depends on you!
Daily Learning Intentions
J. Hattie's research on daily learning intentions is clear and leads to .72 effect size of student growth. Thus, beginning and ending each period (MS) and or portion(s) of the day's schedule(ES) with the learning intention: What, Why and How is key!
Not only is it important for students to know what they are learning, why they are learning and how they are showing understanding(success criteria) but it is equally as important for the teacher to be mindful of knowing if students actually got it. In daily/weekly planning, assessment of the day's learning is the beginning stage vs the ending stage in planning. As a school community we are still in the learning stages but just a couple of tips to support:
What - is the standard or skill (not worksheet, not test, not book)
Why - is this relevant, why is this important (transfer)?
How - students demonstration of the standard/learning
Monitoring the Environment - Teachers should be actively engaged in the learning environment during class periods. Actively engaged means: Monitoring the learning environment (up and down the aisle), 1:1 or small group conferring with students, during guided practice teachers are asking and probing students thinking if noticing misconceptions.
Student Engagement - Many classrooms are integrating technology into daily or weekly practices, Yeah! As we engage in more integration, Tech Time should be intentional and purposeful (What, Why and How) towards grade level standards not gaming or as a free reward times.

Maximizing resources to support, enhance procedural fluency in numeracy skills
This year our site has been afforded the opportunity to have greater access to technology and online resources platforms. DREAMBOX has been purchased on a two year contract to support math "grade level standard aligned - cyclical opportunities" with concepts and skills. I highly encourage your students active use of this online platform and teachers focused/intentional assigned lessons within the platform.

"How did the use of technology enhance student learning?"...Effective vs. Ineffective Instructional Practice
Yeahhhhhhh "greater access" to Technology for our JROB Dolphins. However, Daily Learning Intentions (WHAT/WHY/HOW) are key for instructional best practices.
Here are just a couple of tips of "Effective vs Ineffective" use of technology integration in mathematics. The key question..."How did the technology enhance student learning?
Effective -
-Khan Academy/DreamBox/Desmos - assigned/differentiated instruction-
Shared Google Slides - Each student had their own slide where they could solve a high impact task and they had access to everyone else’s slides/answers to provide questions or justify their response
Ineffective -
On the computer, but no discussion or collaboration between students
Math games with no connection to content
Tech as a babysitter
