Senior Guidance Information
You’ve applied to colleges - what’s next?
Congratulations on applying to college. You have (or hopefully will be) receiving acceptance letters and financial aid awards. Here are some resources to help you navigate the next steps:
MEFA has a very informative webinar - “After the Acceptance”. There is helpful information on understanding your financial aid offers, reviewing how to calculate the balance due and developing a plan for paying the college bill.
The webinar can be found here. The video is 35 minutes long, so if you prefer reading through the presentation, the slides can be found here.
Financial Aid - After you file your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Your financial aid reports are based on the information in your SAR, so it’s important that the information is accurate and up to date.
A Breakdown of the Student Aid Report
As you begin to receive financial aid award letters and packages, it is important to read them thoroughly and compare them closely. Here are some resources to help:
Financial Aid 101 - The Award Letter
Comparing Financial Aid Offers
Don't be afraid to ask a school for more money. Once you compare your financial aid awards, contact the school you hope to attend to see if there is any flexibility in the aid they have to offer.
Read these tips:
Appealing for More Financial Aid
Communicating Special Circumstances to a financial aid office
If you have questions about a financial aid award, we recommend you reach out directly to the financial aid office at that school - they should be able to answer any questions you have.

How Parents & Guardians Can Talk To Youth About Harms and Risks About Vaping
Vaping has become a large problem for youth across the region. Talking to youth about vaping including the risks, harmful side effects, and addiction can be a difficult conversation to breach, but it is essential. When talking about substance use, it is important to highlight three main parts: side effects, addiction and safe choices.
When addressing vaping side effects, you can start with the impact vaping has on the body, more specifically the brain and the effect it has on daily life. The use of nicotine can significantly impact mood, impulse control and overall brain functioning.
Overtime, vaping nicotine can also lead to addiction. Nicotine alters the levels of dopamine in
the brain. Dopamine is the feel good chemical, so as more and more is released the body
becomes dependent on nicotine leading to addictive effects. The body is also affected by vaping due to the chemicals and carcinogens in vape juice, which can cause lung and airway damage, heart issues, and potentially cancer.
When discussing safe choices, it is often the most difficult part of the conversation due to the
youth culture of peer and social pressure. Discussing the side effects, as well as promoting self-esteem and healthy decision-making can all lead to safe choices and healthy alternatives. In these conversations, it is ultimately important to make sure to have an open, honest conversation free of stigma and judgment. Being able to offer support, resources, and a trusted adult to talk to are all important parts of preventing youth substance use and addiction.
