This year's plan is focused on supporting students' academic and social-emotional development. Classroom instruction using the Second Step curriculum, our school-wide focus on our guiding questions ("Is it safe? Is it kind? Does it promote learning? Does it protect property and our planet?"), and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) are the vehicles for supporting students in this area. Teachers and support staff provide direct instruction on social-emotional skills, design environmental supports, and offer small group instruction, individual school-based counseling and increasingly therapeutic interventions, as needed.
Academically, math is an area of particular focus as we return from distance learning. Fall assessments are directing teachers to areas of need. Our Response to Intervention (RTI) teachers sometimes join classroom teachers to support instruction and they lead RTI groups to provide students with additional time for instruction outside of the classroom. This is true for reading and writing, as well. Classroom and small group supports are available for developing reading foundations, reading fluency, comprehension and writing skills.
In addition to teacher observations and assessment data, communication between community members helps ensure that needs are known and supported. Watch for a student and family survey over the next couple of weeks to offer your input. Talk with your child's teacher often, and always feel free to contact me directly. See our School Compact for an overview of the student, home and staff partnership.
