Welcome Bagby Families

From Michael Kretsch, Principal

Dear Bagby Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I hope you all have had a relaxing summer with friends and family. We are thrilled to welcome all of you back to a new school year of learning and growing.

I am honored to be joining the Bagby team following fourteen years in education as a teacher and school administrator. I am eager to bring experiences supporting the development of the whole child, integrating technology, and project-based learning. I have heard so much about Bagby’s fantastic families, supportive and knowledgeable staff, and of course, the wonderful students! This opportunity is far more than professional; it is also very personal. Last spring, my wife Angela and I bought our home near Doerr Park. In the past fourteen months, we have come to understand what makes Cambrian such a special place. From trick-or-treating, to neighborhood Easter egg hunts and block parties, we feel so fortunate to have found more than a house, but an amazing community in which we intend to live and raise our sons.

Class Lists will be posted on Bagby’s webpage and in front of the office after 6 p.m. Monday, August 12th. Students will be identified on the class list by his/her student number. You should have received your child’s identification number via email or mail over the last few weeks. If you have not, please contact the district office at 408.377.2103.

Please keep in mind that during the first two weeks of school our enrollment is in a transition period, and there may be changes to class assignments as student enrollment stabilizes. If changes are necessary, we will do our very best to take into consideration the needs of individual students. No matter who your child is placed with this year, you can be assured that they will have a teacher who will provide them with an excellent educational experience and many opportunities to extend their learning based on individual abilities, interests and achievement.

Families of TK students, you’re welcome to attend the TK Family Orientation on Tuesday, 8/13 from 9:00-10:00 a.m.. Come meet Ms. Jensen, drop off school supplies, and explore Room 15.

ALL Bagby Families: Your child’s first day of school is Wednesday, August 14th. The school day for all students begins at 8:20 a.m. All TK/Kindergarten students have an early dismissal of 11:50 a.m. from August 14th through Friday, September 6th. For additional information regarding our Bell Schedule, please refer to the Parent Resources-Bell Schedule portion of our website.

Following the start of school on Wednesday, August 14th, please join the Bagby Home & School Club and me for coffee, food, and other refreshments during our Family Welcome inside the Barracuda Tank.

  • Families of TK, 1st-5th grade students are invited from 8:20-8:50 a.m.

  • Families of Kindergarten students are welcome to attend a brief orientation in their child’s classrooms until 8:50 a.m., and then are welcome to the Kindergarten Parent Welcome beginning at 8:50 a.m. in the Barracuda Tank.

One of the core strengths of Bagby is its strong home/school partnerships. I hope you will consider becoming an involved part of our community. Our Home and School Club contributes in so many positive ways to our school culture and supports our students, staff and families. We look forward to having you join this group of amazing volunteers. Your child’s teacher is another important source of volunteer opportunities. There is a job for everyone – big or small!

Bagby is a Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) school. This is a comprehensive behavioral plan that empowers all children to make positive choices about their own behavior. One of the things that you will see throughout the campus and in each classroom are the three expectations for all students and adults at Bagby:

  1. Be Safe

  2. Be Responsible

  3. Be Respectful

Whenever an opportunity arises to problem solve with a student, we approach the problem through the “lens” of our Bagby 3 B’s.

Please read the pick-up and drop-off procedures on our website carefully. We need your help in implementing these in order to provide a safe environment for all of Bagby students. We are a busy school and congestion at drop off and pick up times is an ongoing challenge. We need your help! Please consider participating in our Walk N’ Roll Program as many families find it the most efficient and relaxing way to get your child to and from school.

Campus safety is an ongoing top priority for the district and our school. Access to the campus during the school day is available only through the school office where we will request that you sign in and get a badge if you will be on the school grounds.

Below are some additional start-of-school items that you may want to be aware of:

  • Class supply lists are available on our website. Please reference the lists created by our grade level teams there.

  • On-site extended daycare (not affiliated or sponsored by Bagby School) is available through the ATLC at 408.264.3152 and After School Adventures at 408.264.8400. Please contact our front office for more information regarding the programs and other off-site options.

I hope every one of you will attend our Back-To-School Night on Wednesday, September 4th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a very important opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and continue to build the vital home-school partnership that drives student success. More information regarding Back to School Night will be in subsequent newsletters and communications.

Finally, I am deeply appreciative for the transitional support of Ms. Annie Murphy, Ms. Darlis Callaway, the teaching staff, and district personnel as I step into the role as Bagby’s school principal. I am confident that the Bagby staff and community will continue the work of preparing all Bagby students for success. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you throughout the year as we partner to best support our children.
