A message from Dr. Erwin
This week the community learned about the district’s decision to move to a hybrid format for school in April. I’m sure the announcement created excitement, relief, and joy among those students and families who are eager for us to return to the building. I also know that for some students and families the announcement was met with some concern, and anxiety. These are understandable reactions during these turbulent times. We will help all students move forward through the rest of the school year, wherever their classroom is--at school or at home.
I want to first acknowledge the tremendous effort of BHS educators since March, 2020. Since then their dedication to their students is seen every day as they create the best possible opportunities for student learning, and continue to do so today. Our staff reached out to forge or maintain strong positive relationships with students. They converted their homes into classrooms; learned how to navigate an array of programs and applications; and became expert online teachers. They faced challenge after challenge since March and now they face another—the move to hybrid. We were able to consider a move into hybrid learning due, in large part, to the work of these stellar educators. I know, without reservation, that they will rise to this newest challenge.
I also want to recognize the effort of our students. This is not the school year they hoped for or ever imagined. We asked them to show up and engage—Log In and Learn—and they have. They are doing some incredible work in classes; learning to navigate multiple online platforms, and managing their time. We know some are doing exceptionally well and others are struggling. Through it all they are showing their resilience, appreciation for their teachers, and patience. They faced adjustments and setbacks since March and now we’re asking them to make another shift. I am confident, supported by you and BHS educators, they will rise to meet this challenge as well.
Our families as well contributed to the success of our experience so far. Your homes became classrooms and your students and your offices all day. Now families face a decision about sending students back to school or having them remain at home. I know that will be a difficult decision for many families and we will provide as many opportunities possible to support you. Given the strength of our community I know we will continue to meet the new phase of this year with patience, grace, and understanding. On behalf of BHS, thank you for the trust that you placed in us to provide the best education possible this year and moving forward.
There will be opportunities next week for families to find out more about the change that is coming April 19th. The district will provide information, videos, and forums. We are adjusting the focus of our two family forums next week. These will be open question and answer sessions about the switch to hybrid learning in April.
For eleven months I’ve been reminding us of our goal as a school, that we come through this collective struggle stronger, smarter, and kinder. The transition in April is another chance for us to experience and practice that goal.
Be well,
Anne S. Erwin

Un mensaje de la Dra. Erwin
Anne S. Erwin

Beaver Lodge and Mindfulness/
Hello Beaver Families. This week we are going to build on our community-wide practices of Mindfulness Mondays and Gratitude Fridays. We do this to help students build their social emotional learning muscles with tools that will help them to reduce stress, increase focus and improve emotional regulation. Consistency and predictability are really important to creating safe and supported learning environments so we hope that these practices will become a welcome activity our students look forward to each week.
With that said, we would love to have you join us in this effort. Are you interested in learning more about the benefits of mindfulness and how to start? Does building a stronger parent/caregiver community sound like something you would like to be a part of? Your school social worker, Campbell Stewart, and Mindfulness Studies teacher, Mary Bengel, are excited to offer a parent mindfulness group starting Monday, March 8th. We’ll experiment with some mindfulness practices and then open it up for some conversation and connection. More information to come! Feel free to forward questions to Campbell at anne_stewart@beaverton.k12.or.us
