Operation Share the Season
The Liberty Elementary School Student Council IMPACT (Intentionally Modeling Positivity and Change Together) Ambassadors recently partnered with students in Mrs. Drudy's 2nd grade class to spread a little holiday cheer to local servicemen and servicewomen who are currently serving overseas.
Our IMPACT Ambassadors sought names and addresses of local troops from the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter...only to discover that many of them are former students of our very own LES! From there, the Ambassadors created a budget, researched global shipping restrictions, and cultural expectations. Next, they did a little online shopping. Collectively, they purchased goodies, seasonal items, and necessities to pack and send to these military men and women. Also included were drawings and heartfelt letters of encouragement (from the 2nd graders).
This worthwhile service-learning program was made possible by a generous grant from generationOn Indiana, and was facilitated by the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) and the Indiana Middle Level Education Association (IMLEA).
"Operation Share the Season" not only reminds the military men and women of our own community that are serving abroad in the military that they are remembered, but the project--no doubt--instilled a philanthropic spirit in our students at a very young age. As an added bonus, as our IMPACT ambassadors worked alongside the 2nd graders, they were indeed modeling the positivity and change that is their very mantra.
"So, what's next for the Ambassadors?" you might ask. These students are always looking for ways to give back to their community. They've agreed that organizing a food drive is a simple, impactful way to make a difference—and #GrinchforGood is the campaign they'll promote to make it easy and fun for our students and their families.
