Disciplinary Updates
We will be implementing OSS return conferences 2nd semester. If a student is returning from any OSS assignment, they will be required to formally meet with their grade level admin or grade level counselor before going back to class. This is being done thanks to your helpful feedback on the December staff culture survey, so thank you!
Also, please remember that if you EVER have a question related to student disciplinary consequences, please see your grade level administrator. Remember, 3 minors equal a major, but you need to have your rosters entered and updated in Ed Handbook. Please see your grade level admin if you're not sure how to do this. It will truly help in making everything more efficient!
Caught Being...
As of right now, we have ONE, I repeat, ONE entry for January in the Caught Being Google Drive. This is one of our only forms of individual student recognition currently at CMS. Think about how excited we all get when we get recognized for doing great things or going above and beyond the all of duty.... our students need to feel that sense of gratification also! When a student stops in the hallway to help someone pick up their belongings that fell on the floor, give them a CARING card. When a student in your class challenges your knowledge by asking questions about your own content that even you don't know the answer to, give them an INQUIRER card. When a shy student stands up in front of the class to present or raises their hand to volunteer, give them a RISK TAKER card. You all should have recieved a new set of cards this week in your mailbox. We have so many things going on as teachers, but one thing we need to make time for is recognizing the gold in our students! So please take the time to recognize a student, I promise it will be time well spent!
Either upload the picture to the google drive, text the picture to 704-467-4213 or email the picture to Melody.Quick@cabarrus.k12.nc.us.
The Gold Standard Reminders
We have had a significant increase in referrals for "Skipping" since we returned in January. In order to cut down on the amount of skipping, please make sure that you are enforcing the15 minute rule! Students should NOT be released from class during the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of class. Also, make sure that you are taking attendance (on paper, not in Powerschool) every class and checking absences with the absentee list sent out each day by Ms. Stammen.
Sometimes the presence of an adult is all it takes to deter a student from acting inappropriately. Be sure to monitor the hallways during EVERY class change to make our presence visible and hopefully cut down on inappropriate behaviors!
If you have not already done so, please update your rosters in Educator Handbook so that you are able to see Minor referrals for your students! Once a student has received 3 minors, they need to be written up in Educator Handbook for a Major referral!
Students attend 5 classes each day. That means they must adjust to five separate teacher personalities and classroom routines! Please remind students of your classroom expectations daily so that students know what you expect from them while they are in your room.
Safe Schools Reminder - due March 1
SafeSchools: Our second SafeSchools required modules are Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse: Impact on Students and Scent Awareness that began on Monday, December 3, 2018. Employees will have until March 1, 2019 to complete these modules. See Mr. Mabry if you have any questions.
MTSS Framework Reminders
NC MTSS is a FRAMEWORK for TOTAL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT that includes ALL students:
- It is NOT a process for struggling students
- It is NOT just about academics
- It is NOT just about interventions
- It is NOT implemented by creating/utilizing a set of forms to follow certain steps/procedures.
- NC MTSS is a framework that includes a systemic means of problem solving data (student outcomes and implementation data) and using that information to improve outcomes for ALL students and to provide needed supports to classroom teachers. EVERYTHING we do at CMS is a part of MTSS!
