Academic Updates
Math
We are continuing our Fractions unit. Students have now learned how to do all four operations involving fractions, so we will be applying these math skills to real-world problems.
Language Arts
We are continuing Unit 7. During this unit, we will be reading a variety of texts about how our society has been shaped by conflict. We will also be focusing on Opinion Writing, with an emphasis on how to incorporate text evidence and quotations in writing to support an opinion or idea.
Science
We are beginning Owl Pellets! We had a lesson on Friday about the human skeletal system, and briefly introduced owl pellets by reading an article about an owl's digestive system. This week, students will actually begin dissecting their owl pellets. They will be carefully removing bones from the pellets and then using them to reconstruct (and identify) the skeleton of the animal (usually a small rodent) the owl ate. This process requires painstaking and methodical attention to detail, and will likely take 3-4 weeks to complete. The completed skeletons will be on display during Open House in March.
Social Studies
In conjunction with our Language Arts unit, we will be examining how the American Revolution led to the development of our U.S. Constitution.
