Aiming to Keep You Informed
OCTOBER 1, 2021
From the Office
Study Hall / Flex time
Next week, we will begin reintroducing a few flextime options that we have offered to students in past years. Starting next week, students will rotate on an every other day basis between study hall and flextime. During flextime, students will have opportunities to play 4-square, Knock-out basketball, or walk the Track. Students will be required to wear a mask during all of these activities and hand sanitizer will be available near each station. If students choose not to participate in the activities offered, they may choose to sit in the bleachers during flextime. When the weather cooperates, staff may also take students outside during either flextime or study hall any day of the week.
As a reminder, during study hall students are encouraged to complete school work, read a book, or quietly socialize with a neighbor. Based on the discretion of the study hall supervisor, students are extended the privilege of using their cell phones to quietly listen to music with headphones, or use them for other school appropriate relaxing activities. If you prefer your child not use their cell phone during study hall, please encourage your child to choose one of the first options listed. As a school staff, we are continually encouraging students to use their time wisely to complete school related tasks during study hall or to quietly socialize face to face with neighbors. We believe that limiting cell phone usage at school will benefit our students in the long run. Thank you for your continued support!
School Planbooks
Our Student Council will begin selling School Planbooks during lunch. The cost per planbook is $5.oo. If your child would like to purchase a planbook, please have them bring money to lunch.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
On October 15th, Westfield teachers will share the scheduling procedures with parents & guardians, so you may begin scheduling conferences with your child's teachers. District 13 has set aside Monday, November 22nd & Tuesday, November 23rd for the majority of requested Parent-Teacher Conferences, however Westfield staff will always do their best to accommodate requests that fall outside of those two days. This year, parents & guardians will have the option of visiting with teachers in person or using Google Meets. Look for detailed PTC information on 10/15/21.
Kleenex Tissue
If your child has not brought in a tissue box this year, please encourage them to bring one to their first period teacher. Due to the fact that we are not using lockers, many students may have forgotten to bring in their tissue boxes at the start of the year. We appreciate the help!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Keep Your Student Compliant...and Eligible for Sports
- Parents bring in their 6th-grader's full physical so that their student is compliant to be in school; 6th grade will automatically be good-to-go for sports as well.
- For 7th and 8th graders to be eligible to play sports, they need only a current sports physical on file with the nurse. Students CANNOT attend tryouts without a current physical on file.
- Questions? Email Mrs. Jones at bjones@sd13.org
Thank you!

Quarantining due to Close Contact
A Close Contact is anyone with whom the confirmed COVID case had close contact, within 3 feet, for at least 15 minutes throughout the course of 24 hours. Exposure on a bus must include everyone who sat within 3 feet of the confirmed or probable COVID case for 15 minutes or longer. At lunch, with masks removed, close contacts are anyone within 6 feet for 15 minutes or longer.
Westfield Middle School does not have to exclude all students in a classroom from attending school because a student in the classroom tested positive for COVID...Only those students who were Close Contacts with the confirmed student will be required to quarantine for 14 days. It is important for students to wear a mask & maintain 3-feet of social distance from others at all times.
If your child is quarantining at home:
A Remote Learning Support Teacher (RLST) will provide two and a half hours (2 ½) of daily contact for students using Google Meets.
A RLST will email each student and their parent/guardian with the link to join the support sessions.
Students are expected to work independently on their school work in conjunction with the 2 ½ hours of direct contact they receive from our RLST.
- Student work will be made available by each of their classroom teachers.
- Students and their parents/guardians should stay in regular contact with each teacher to determine the best method to access materials and resources.
- Individual teachers may exempt students from portions of the work that is missed or provide alternative activities for lessons that are difficult to recreate at home.
- Students will receive extended time to complete school work upon their return to the classroom.
