CROC TALK BRIEF
Nancy Ryles Elementary Newsletter ~ April 27, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families,
And just like that, April is on its way out. These last few days of sunshine have been wonderful and they are a reminder that our school year is winding down. We have 36 student days left in the school year, and yet we still have so much to do. Before we head into May, I want to shout out some THANK YOU messages for April.
- Thank you Ms. Lynch and Mrs. Henry for helping our fourth grade students perform Pirates, The Musical last night. It was an impressive event! I loved seeing so many students with individual singing and speaking parts. Thank you to the many families who stepped into our hot gym last night to hear the performance. Who knew that last night was going to be the warmest day of the year so far. We appreciate your support!!
- Last week, we celebrated the artists of Nancy Ryles. Student art work from our Art Literacy program was displayed thoughout our hallways. This is always one of my favorite nights because ALL STUDENTS have something to share. Thank you Cory Lines once again for leading the work. And thank you to all of the parent volunteers who come to school each month to teach the lessons. You are appreciated!
- During our art night, we also had an auction filled with amazing donations. Thank you to our sponsors and thank you to Erin Mills for organizing this event.
What’s coming up in May?
- We have our first NRCO STEM night on Thursday, May 10. This is an evening to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This is a hands-on evening for families. To encourage family involvement, next week students will be bringing home a design challenge. Wondering what this challenge is? Ask your students about it next Thursday when they come home from school.
- In May, we will also be asking you to donate food to Project Second Wind, part of the Oregon Food Bank. Details coming soon……
- Friday, May 18 is our big CROC WALK. Students will be walking to help raise money to support our NRCO. Did you know that our NRCO uses every dollar you send in to support students. Here are a few examples of what your dollars support:
+ $6,000 to classrooms to purchase materials
+ $1,200 to provide for classroom parties
+ Funds to support our Kindergarten Welcome to Nancy Ryles Social
+ Funds to support Family Evening Events (Bingo Night, Carnival, Family Dance, Art Night, STEM Night, Culture Night)
+ Funds to support Field Day, PE and Recess Equipment, Art Literacy, our Green Team and so much more.
Our goal this year is to raise $25,000 during our Croc Walk, which is approximately $45 per child. We really do need you to help support the work we do here at school!
Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you in advance for your support.
Kayla

It has been my extreme pleasure to help for 8 years with this program. I am very happy with my last Art Show at Nancy Ryles. It has been wonderfully enriching to be apart of such an amazing volunteer only run program with the Beaverton School District.
Thanks again to every person who helps to teach the Art Program to our awesome kids.

STATE ASSESSMENT SCORE REPORTING (Grades 3, 4 and 5)
The administration of our state assessment will take place between April 18 and June 1.
Beginning this year, state test scores are available in ParentVUE! You will be able to see your child’s test results sooner than in prior years with less impact on the environment. For the English Language and Math tests, a student’s score is available in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Science test scores are available in Parent VUE three days after the test is completed. The Testing Information tab in ParentVUE has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school.
Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive a paper report of test scores. Paper score reports will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Score reports will be mailed over the summer for students with test results that arrive after the paper score reports are printed in June. Students with at least one parent/guardian with ParentVUE access may request a printed report by contacting Kay Jenkins by email at kay_jenkins@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.

SCHOOL BREAKFAST IS COOL
Everyday is a perfect day for school breakfast!
As the summer approaches, kids often become more restless and distracted at school. You can help to make sure that their last weeks of school are productive by ensuring that they begin the day with a nutritious breakfast. Studies show a good breakfast makes kids more alert, less distractible, and better behaved in school; it can even improve their test scores!
Let’s keep our students focused by making sure they begin every school day with a balanced meal at home or at the School Breakfast Program.
2018-2019 BSD SCHOOL CALENDAR ** REVISED
The November no school days have been adjusted.
PLEASE NOTE: The first day of school is Monday, August 27 (this is the Monday before Labor Day).
We encourage you to plan your summer vacations with the start of school in mind.

5th GRADE PE SURVEY
The District is surveying 5th and 8th grade students to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District’s Physical Education and nutrition plan. The survey window is May 9 - June 8.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available at Nancy Ryles Elementary and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify your child's teacher.
