Meet Van de Graaff (Generator)

Mr. Negus' Physics students got to see and experience a Van de Graaff Generator this semester to learn about static electrical charges that can build up on the surface of the aluminum sphere shown, once it is plugged in. If the air around it is dry, what you see is happening because a spinning belt not seen inside it, delivers charges that are all the same strength and they strongly repel away from each other. That is why the cotton strings are pushing outward, and are attracted to the opposite parts (negative or positive) of the atoms of the student’s hands. The students did not touch them or they would have gotten a mild shock. Shockless safe learning about what nature can do if certain conditions are met.
