October 2022
From the Principal, Dr. Tobon
Viking Families and Friends,
It’s hard to believe we are officially done with the first quarter of the 2022-23 academic year. After a much deserved Fall Break, our 9th-11th graders dove into the PSAT/NMSQT. During this time, our seniors had the opportunity to visit colleges or universities, participate in community service, or engage in a job shadowing experience as they prepare for life after high school.
On the afternoon of September 23rd, our teachers participated in professional development created and facilitated by our instructional coaches. These sessions focused on instructional strategies to increase writing and discussion in the classrooms. Teachers also had the opportunity to engage in curriculum development for their courses. Future sessions will explore the use of data to set students up for success.
Finally, I’d like to extend my congratulations to our students who were recently recognized for their academic excellence. More than 800 Vikings earned academic recognition through the Valpo Schools Foundation by either earning an academic letter or a chevron. Four of our Vikings were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Commended Students: Christine Chen, Molly Dreher, Thomas Kay, and Isaak Schuitema. Keep up the great work and continue to follow your dreams.

Drama Club Fall Musical: The Comedy of Terrible Errors!
November 18-20, the VHS Drama Club presents The Comedy of Terrible Errors. What happens when a high school theatre troupe and their student director try to tackle one of Shakespeare's...not so great plays? A show that is packed with mistaken identities, poor decision making, and ridiculous plot holes that keeps going wrong at every turn. While holding on to their (ill-fitting) pants, these actors are learning that even Shakespeare didn't always get it right.

This is my second year teaching at VHS, but this is my 8th year teaching. I taught for 6 years at a private school on the South Side of Chicago. I am currently teaching Geometry Advanced, Algebra 2, and Probability and Statistics/Trigonometry. I have been coaching within the boy's soccer program for 2 years and I am currently the head JV coach. Back in Chicago, I was previously a coach within the boy's and girl's soccer program for 6 years before I made the move to Valparaiso.
My favorite part about joining the VHS family is the connections I have been able to make with my coworkers and my students. Everyone has been so welcoming, even from my very first day in this building. I feel like I have already made friendships that will last a lifetime. After my first day in the classroom at VHS, I knew that this is where I am meant to be. Everyday is something new, and I am constantly thinking on my toes. I love seeing and experiencing all of the different aspects and qualities each student will bring to my classroom that day. Each class has their own personality and identity, and by the end of the year, you feel like you are saying goodbye to family.
Something interesting about myself is I play semi professional soccer for the Midwest Muskrats. They are the first semi professional team based out of Northwest Indiana. It has been so much fun lacing my boots back up and getting to compete at a high level again... even at my age!
