Greetings Woodcrest families,
I am working hard to control my excitement. These last few weeks have been filled with hiring new staff, connecting with returning staff and looking ahead to, what I am describing as, “the best year ever” for Woodcrest. I am excited because we are starting this school year with a clear understanding of what we can do to make the teaching and learning experience more personalized, engaging, and meaningful for everyone.
Over the course of the last 18 months, in partnership with families, the Woodcrest staff have been able to identify what practices are antiquated and need to be abandoned. We have also begun to understand what practices need to be refined and re-invested in. And finally, what we want to create that will bring deep meaning and engagement to the learning experience.
On behalf of the Woodcrest Spanish Immersion School family, “¡Estamos muy emocionados de que sus hijos regresen a la escuela!”
Health and Safety Updates
Last evening, the school board took action to update the health and safety plan for the school year. Due to high virus transmission in Anoka County, preK-4 will be starting the school year with face masks at Woodcrest – except while eating or outdoors. By federal requirement masks are also required on school buses.
Refer to the message sent earlier today explaining the plan and process. Our model will allow us the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions in Anoka County with clearly defined points at which masking may change.
Online option for Spanish Immersion
A number of you have reached out to me with questions about an online learning option for Spanish Immersion. We will offer a fully online option for students for as long as the pandemic lingers. At this time, very few families have expressed interest. We need to understand the commitment from families in order to design the best learning experience and secure staff.
If you prefer online learning for your student for first trimester, please enroll as soon as possible and preferably by tomorrow, Thursday, August 26. Enrollment impacts our staffing and has a cascade effect within the building. Enroll by emailing enrollment@district16.org noting you want to change your child’s home school from Woodcrest to SLP Schools Online for Spanish Immersion.
Meet and Greet
Homeroom rosters are being finalized and we will share your child’s homeroom teacher with you before Meet and Greet next week. I have taken into consideration all parent requests and suggestions and we have created the best possible homeroom rosters with the student data we have.
Our Woodcrest Meet & Greet is Wednesday, September 1, 3-6 p.m. You will receive a communication directly from your child’s teacher with detailed information about the Meet & Greet inviting you to sign up for a 10-minute in-person meeting with your child’s homeroom teacher. These meetings will allow teachers to learn from you and your child about their learning preferences and begin adding to their Learner Profile.
During Meet and Greet, we will have family activities near the playground and hope to have a food truck or two available for a fun dinner/snack option for families. When you are here, please be mindful of physical distancing recommendations and wear a face mask while inside the school building.
Whew. I know that’s a lot of information and there are many decisions for families to make. Like I said at the top of this letter, we here at Woodcrest Spanish Immersion School “¡Estamos muy emocionados de que sus hijos regresen a la escuela!” We are all excited about your children are returning to school this year.
I hope you and your family find the time to really enjoy these last days of summer. I look forward to partnering with you all this year and seeing you next week for Meet and Greet.

Enroll for voluntary supplemental student accident insurance
Accidents aren’t supposed to happen, but they do. School recess, one-day field trips and general day-to-day activities can all lead to injuries. Having coverage during school hours, or around the clock can ensure students get the care they need without financial hardship to their families. This program is completely voluntary and any enrolled student is eligible for coverage. Parents or guardians of students are responsible for enrollment and premium payment.
