Parent Bulletin - February 13, 2023

Geographic Exceptions (GE) period open until March 1

Under Hawaii laws, all persons attending public school are required to attend the school in the geographic area in which they reside. However, permission to attend another school may be granted by the Department.

For families looking for an exception, fill out the GE Application MV1 form (linked below), and submit to the home school (for new students) along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and a current proof of residency (The home school serves the geographic area of the child's residence). GE applications for the next school year shall be submitted between January 1 and March 1 to facilitate a decision before the end of the school year.

Please note that if your family has moved and are no longer in the school boundaries, you will also have to fill out a GE application

Kids Heart Challenge

Aloha Families - Our Kids Heart Challenge program is kicking off on 2/15/23! We are proud to support the American Heart Association and Be the Torch in the fight against heart disease and stroke! Students will learn how to keep their hearts happy and healthy through physical and mental wellbeing, while helping others with special hearts by raising lifesaving donations. Our goal is to have 100% of our school families join the team and learn Hands Only CPR through Finn’s Mission. Don’t wait, get started TODAY! Students who join the team early will get recognized at our kick-off!

1. REGISTER at http://www.heart.org/khc

2. TAKE THE CHALLENGE to Move More or Be Kind and earn the FREE Be the Torch Wristband when we kick-off!

3. COMPLETE FINN’S MISSION in your HQ to learn Hands-Only CPR, how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T., and how you can help kids with special hearts!

Thank you for supporting our school and this lifesaving program!

Sharing information from the Kalani High School's Robotics team:

Hello parents! Team Magma's Kalani Robotics Academy is opening up registration for the 2023 spring session! The registration deadline is March 3rd. The classes available for the 2023 spring session are as follows:

In this academy, instead of focusing on robots on the ground, students will be exploring up in the skies! Our goal is to put drones in student's hands and get them hooked on the idea of flying robots. Students will get to fly and program their own drones for the week, zipping through obstacle courses and watching fun drone demos hosting competition drones built by Kalani students!

> Program, play, compete! Learn how to fly your first drone with Nimbus Aerobotics!

> Grade requirement: 4th - 8th grade

VEX IQ Academy

Engage in fun hands-on STEM learning through competitive robotics! Students will learn how to build, program, and compete with their own VEX IQ competition robot. Rookie or pro, students throughout the week hone their skills through class competitions before playing in a full scale VEX IQ tournament at the end of the academy!

> Newcomers will be introduced to the world of robotics and programming through fun activities!

> Returning students will be delighted to experience a new set of activities and a new tournament!

> Grade requirement: 3rd - 7th grade
