Thoughts from Dr. Pacatte
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting all four of our schools to conduct “Read Alouds” with some of our students. I am scheduled to visit grades K-8 in the last few weeks of the year. This brings about an important reminder. Almost everyone enjoys listening to a good book. I share my own story of how much I enjoyed being read to as a child. My mother claims she read, Humm… The Singing Hamster, every night for a year. I’m not sure if that is true or not - given the use of exaggeration when she wants to make point! I share with the students how our adult children would ask to have their back rubbed, which was code for reading a book, as they got older. Sometimes I’d read the sports page or Shel Silverstein poems or a picture book. It was relaxing and calming for each of us. You see, picture books aren’t just for our youngest readers, they are really great listens as well. I know families are very busy, but it is that never ending running around that leads to a disconnection. Sharing a good book, story, or a poem together is a great way to remind each other how important you are to one another, even if you have to do it every night.
