MAP OR A COMPASS
In our Key Leaders meeting this week I taught on the concept of a map and a compass as it relates to Christian Education and Shiloh specifically. This is the abridged version of the concept we worked through.
MAP OR A COMPASS
The map and compass are arguably two of the most impactful tools that have ever been created.
Maps serve as a structure that establishes a information, clarity, boundaries, a reference, or known point.
A compass serves as tool of guidance that aligns you to the earth’s magnetic field.
So why in the world am I talking about maps/compasses/How does this apply to Shiloh?
MAP
Maps are complicated, how they work is intricate, and ironically out of date almost the day that you print them.
We have to think of Shiloh Christian School as a map. We are here to serve as a structure that provides knowledge, clarity, boundaries, a reference, and a known point. Education is ever changing and similar to a map, out of date the day you establish anything in education. However, there are absolute truths that remain in every map and the same with Shiloh. Our pedagogy and methodologies may change but where we base our truth never will. Our doctrine and the cannon of scripture remain pure and steadfast. How we immerse students in God’s Word must be systematic.
I always want what our students learn here at Shiloh to be a reference point to come back to, a known point.
COMPASS
We have to view the compass as our students soul. How well we take what is in our curriculum/our school/our programs throughout the year and make them impactful and come to life for an individual is critical.
A compass must always be trued. As does someone’s soul. It must be reconciled with a known reference. Maps are always orientated toward true north which is a fixed point. A compass will always align north as it aligns to the earth’s magnetic field or magnetic north. The difference between true north and magnetic north is ironically called declination.
For example, where we live in Arkansas is -4.5 degrees of declination from true north and areas of the United States can go as high as 21 degrees off. That means if you follow your compass north and you make no corrections you will never actually reach true north. Therefore, an input has to be made to be on the right track. The same is true with our lives. No matter how hard we try to do what is right on our own accord we will inevitably be off course without the Holy Spirit guiding us.
A persons compass is inevitably tainted by this world and pulled from where true north is. Our own biases, traits, upbringing, where we live, where we go to church, who we are married to, who our friends are, what we listen to, etc. all impact how much pull we allow this world to have on our north arrow.
We have to understand what our temptations are, what causes us to stumble, and ultimately what our weaknesses are so that we know how far we have to correct to actually track to true north. Due to us living in a fallen world we will always face declination and a dependence on Christ to true our compass…our soul.
So how do we true our compass? Remember it has to be consistently trued and reconciled against a known reference.
For us that is the Gospel. The gospel is interwoven into who we are here at Shiloh. We must present the Gospel in a way that pierces the soul of the students so that His word is hidden in their heart and His truth has the opportunity to guide their internal compass which is their soul. How God moves through each one of our teachers, coaches, and administrators will impact our students internal compass and how they view the world.
We have to utilize the map of Shiloh to impact their internal compass so that their North arrow always points toward truth NOT truth defined by this world.
Why does all of this matter:
We have to remember our students won’t always have their map. They won’t always have Shiloh. But they will always have their compass. That is why our time with these students here at Shiloh Christian School is so critical. We have a finite amount of time to make a lasting impact. That fires me up!
Thank you for believing in Kingdom Education!
