Take the 5 Essentials Survey
District 58 invites parents to take the State’s Parent 5-Essentials Survey.
The 5-Essentials Survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes. District 58 schools will receive a 5-Essentials parent survey report if more than 20% of parents complete the survey.
Take the Parent 5-Essentials Survey here by Friday, Feb. 14, 2020.
These surveys are also anonymous, and the survey results will become a part of District 58’s 2020 Illinois Report Card. Learn more at www.dg58.org/surveys.
Clothing for Cold and Snowy Weather
Please help us to ensure students are wearing appropriate clothing for the weather. We continue to use the District 58 guideline cut-off of 0 degrees (with the wind chill). If the air temperature is 0 degrees or above, we will go outside for recess. If the temperature is below 0 degrees, we will stay indoors.
Please be sure children are coming to school dressed appropriately for spending time outdoors.
When snow is on the ground, our playing in the snow guidelines remain:
Boots + Snow Pants = Play in the snow
Boots, but No Snow Pants = Stay on the blacktop
No Boots = Stay on the blacktop
Daddy Daughter Dance Tonight!
Congratulations to Zachary Yee!
Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is proud to announce that 27 students will advance from the regional to the state level of the PTA Reflections arts recognition and achievement program, including our very own Zachary Yee!
Reflections is a national PTA arts recognition and achievement program for students. Through Reflections, District 58 students in preschool through eighth grade are invited to submit works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The theme for the 2019-20 program is “Look Within.”
Zachary will advance in the area of Dance Choreography. The Illinois PTA will review each student’s work of art and announce those entries advancing to the national level of PTA Reflections this spring.

Parents invited to “Cyber Safety for Children” on Feb. 13
The Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 is pleased to announce that child cyber crime expert Detective Rich Wistocki will return to District 58 to provide a parent education seminar, called “Cyber Safety for Children,” on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at Herrick Middle School. No RSVP is required to attend this meeting; just show up! This seminar will help parents with important issues such as:
Cyberbullying and protecting your family from cyberbullies
Understanding what is on your child’s phone applications
The dangers of posting photos to Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat as well as online gaming
File sharing and video sharing online
Sexting
Controlling and monitoring your child’s cell phone and home computers
Detective Wistocki has previously presented to District 58 parents, most recently in winter 2018, and received very positive feedback.
In addition, for the first time in District 58, Detective Wistocki will conduct student assemblies for all Herrick and O’Neill students on Thursday, Feb. 13 during the school day. These presentations will cover much of the same content as the parent seminar, but in a middle school-friendly format.
Detective Wistocki has dedicated his career to helping children by tirelessly pursuing, apprehending and prosecuting child predators. As an active cyber crimes detective, he educates law enforcement using cutting edge investigative techniques, as well as parents and students on responsible digital activity. Detective Wistocki is a 30-year, decorated member of law enforcement. He spent 22 of those years as an Internet crimes investigator for the Naperville Police Department.
