Bellerose Bulletin
May 2022
A Message from our Admin
Dear Families,
It seems like spring is finally upon us as we enjoy some warmer temperatures and longer days of sunshine. As we shift into a new season, we are also shifting into the final two months of school. We know that these last eight weeks will go by extremely fast as we have a calendar full of exciting events; Bikeathon, Unified Games and Grad, just to name a few.
Recently, we also celebrated Administrative Assistant Day on Wednesday, April 27th. We are continually grateful for the hard work and dedication of our staff. They truly help keep Bellerose at its best.
With so much to celebrate at Bellerose it can be hard to keep up, to help stay informed we encourage you to stay connected through our newsletter, website and social media. We will continue to provide updates for all upcoming events and activities.
Dawn, Jen, Mike & Cam

Bellerose is proud to be hosting this years Metro Athletics Unified Jamboree.
The event will include close to 20 Metro Edmonton schools and involve over 800 participants. Unified Sports is an integral part of the Special Olympics program, providing an opportunity for students with and without intellectual disabilities to train together and compete on the same team.
The purpose of this program is to add athletic opportunities for students who may not normally compete in high school sports while ensuring a positive impact on school culture by forging pathways to friendship and understanding among students.

The IB Corner
Welcome to another edition of the IB corner…
Hi Everyone! Welcome to the IB Corner. May is a busy month in the IB world. It is hard to believe that grade 12 IB students are near the end of their diploma programme journey. They will write their “IB exams”, starting on May 4. DP literature, Spanish, French, history, biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics courses culminate in externally assessed examinations. It will be a stressful but exciting time for our students; please join their teachers in wishing them all the best as they prepare to write.
In other news, I want to acknowledge and celebrate two partnerships that our diploma programme teachers have established with our broader community. These relationships leverage the wisdom and expertise that exists outside of our school to strengthen the implementation of our IB programme. First, I wish to highlight the work that our Social 10i class does with Boys and Girls Club Big Brothers and Big Sisters. On a rotating basis, each Social 10i student engages in mentorship work with a younger “buddy” in the St. Albert Public School district facilitated by the expert team at Boys and Girls Club. Their work focuses on relationship and social skill development for mutual benefit. Mrs. Angela Thompson is behind the impressive work at Bellerose and, when you talk to her about it, is quick to highlight the impressive social skill gains made by students in these peer-peer relationships in just a short time. They and their mentees form unique bonds that sustain their important work together throughout the year. Check out the picture below to see our proud Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The mentors and mentees will meet for their last visit of the year on May 12.
New this year, I am excited that our Biology HL Year One class is working in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). DUC’s Wetland Center of Excellence (WCE) program funds and provides expert advice to facilitate student-led conservation projects at local wetlands across Canada. This year, our Biology HL Year One class will be conducting student-led projects at the John E. Poole wetland site in Lois Hole Provincial park to protect and conserve natural lands. I am proud to say that Bellerose is the first Wetland Center of Excellence in Alberta and the 26th in the country. Our students will apply their knowledge of conservation biology and ecology to make lasting change in their community by building relationships with the land. After all, some will say that what the world needs now is not more scientific knowledge about climate change but a love and reverence for the land.
As always, I am incredibly proud of the work our teachers and students do inside and outside of the classroom to make the world a better place. I wish you all the best as we head into June.
Let’s go, Oilers!
Clayton
