Capturing Kids' Hearts
Continue to greet students at the door, encourage students to do the same. X-plore by having a journal question on the board as a warm-up when students arrive. Share good things first and then call on a few students each day to share something good happening with them. Be sure to call on students who are not volunteering, as well, so that everyone has an opportunity to share by the end of the week.
Allow students to share their journals. This will help build connections. Review previous learning to assess the group's needs and make connection of past learning to new learning. Finally, empower student buy-in by communicating the benefits of the social contract, (Some of you are just getting to the social contract, which is fine.). Provide opportunities for students to affirm one another. Please refer to page 43 for additional information.
Remember the EXCEL model:
Engage - meet and greet, handshake, affirmations, modeling
X-Plore - journal questions, good things
Communicate -actual lesson content
Empower - Use and do, develop skills, social contract, feedback, encouragement, etc.
Launch - Summarize, commit to action, meaningful ending, share your passion
