"IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE THAN CURSE THE DARKNESS."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Message from Superintendent Mueller
Good Afternoon, CUSD!
CHS Homecoming is always a special time in Coronado, especially for our high school seniors. The entire community is welcome and encouraged to attend the Homecoming parade today at 4pm on Orange Avenue (between Adella Avenue and 7th Street) and the football game tonight at 7pm. For the first time ever the Homecoming Dance will be held on the CHS Quad, so if you happen to see high school students dressed up near campus on Saturday night you will know why! And, another first, student or staff pets will be crowned and join the Homecoming Court. Thank you, Ms. Belong and CHS ASB students, for your creativity and spirit!
Kudos to our Silver Strand Elementary staff and families for modeling a positive mindset and resilience this week after a lightning strike on Monday night hit a transformer and knocked out power in the entire area. Silver Strand staff arrived on campus early and prepared to welcome students to school on Tuesday morning. Despite the power being out for the entire school day, our resourceful staff found creative ways to provide instruction, meals, and services. We are very proud of the Voyager community!
The Positive School Climate Committee, composed of staff and community representatives, continues its work and hosted a meeting this week. The team is looking at best practices and existing character and school climate programs with a goal of establishing a unified vision that illustrates district-wide efforts and initiatives to combat bullying, harassment, and bias in our schools. The committee will share its findings and a recommendation to the Governing Board this winter.
And finally, we have an update in the CIF Appeal (for sanctions related to the June 19 Men's Basketball Championship) process. The CUSD third-party investigation has been finalized but it is in the possession of our attorney and will not be released until after the appeal process is completed. Our legal team and district representatives were prepared to present our case to the CIF Executive Committee on Monday, September 27, however, a last minute introduction of evidence from CIF resulted in a postponement of the hearing until November 1. We have confirmation from CIF that no sanctions will be imposed against CUSD throughout the appeal process.
Don’t forget that all CUSD schools will be closed on Monday for Fall Holiday.
Have a restful long weekend,
Karl J. Mueller
