The LaCrosse Play-by-Play
News from Mrs. LaCrosse's 2nd Grade Classroom
Hello, Families!
This past week was full of assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students completed a math pre-test on Tuesday, the STAR reading assessment on Wednesday, writing assessments on Wednesday (opinion/argument) and Thursday (informational text), and they will complete another writing assessment (narrative) and the STAR math assessment tomorrow (Friday).
We have started our mathematics unit on measurement. Students are currently working on measuring the length of objects by selecting and using appropriate tools (rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes). Your child should know that a ruler can measure inches, and that inches are larger than centimeters (also commonly found on rulers). Your child should also know that to measure accurately, he or she must begin at 0 on the ruler and read the inches at the end of the object he/she is measuring. To solidify this concept, students cut out mini rulers, drew lines, and labeled their measurements in their interactive math notebooks. We also measured gummy worms, stretched them, and measured again. Students then found the difference between the original length and the stretched length of their gummy worms. We had a blast! See pictures below!
I will be out of the classroom tomorrow, as second-grade teachers across the district will be meeting for professional development. Please remind your child to be the best possible helper to our substitute, Mrs. Hlavin.
Next week, we will continue our measurement unit. Look for homework to come home in your child's red folder. The due date will be written in the top right corner. Please look for school and assessment-related items to come home in the Friday Folders (maroon). In reading, we will discuss choosing good I-PICK books ("just right" books) and build stamina in reading. The expectation is that second graders are reading 35 minutes per day outside of school, but I truly believe this is a minimum. If your child is struggling with reading for that amount of time, please let me know and I will work with your child on selecting good books that he/she will not want to put down!
As always, please feel free to contact me with ANY questions.
