Extinguishing Adulting Night!
Hall County Fire and Rescue gladly answered the call when asked to share a program to the students of their local Mountain Ed campus regarding fire safety in their home. Chief JR Tucker presented to students gathered in the cafe as to several aspects of the use of small fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
Most compelling, in keeping with the “Close Before You Doze” campaign, Chief Tucker had a video showing a live demonstration of a home that catches on fire and how it spreads depending on the doors to bedrooms being either left open or closed. The observers invited walked through the mock home, seeing the pillows, stuffed animals and other items in the rooms and then were escorted back out in front of it to observe the start of the fire, how quickly it spread with the synthetic fabrics, and then to tour the home once again after the fire was extinguished. It was very informative and compelling how the rooms with the door closed were not entirely engulfed while others went extremely quickly. Grad Partner, Denise Dickinson asked about home aids such as detectors, if students were unsure if they had them or they were working well, and he let them know to call their local fire department station and they will gladly come by their home and install them for them, ensuring they do get placed in the home and not forgotten in a drawer.
Lastly, the fire extinguishers were examined, showing the parts and explaining how they work, with the students moving outside to the concrete patio and having the chance to practice using the extinguisher and putting out controlled set fires. Some even wanted to try a second time to get the hang of it. All seemed to deeply appreciate the Firemen who took the time that evening to spend with them, all to shine light on aspects of fire safety.
