A Note from the Health Room
Cases of COVID, FLU, and RSV are on the rise!
Please continue to follow the NSD’s guidelines for when to keep your child home from school. Below are the guidelines that the school nurse uses to evaluate students who may need to go home.
If your child has any of the symptoms below, please keep them home until the symptoms subside.
- APPEARANCE/BEHAVIOR: unusually tired, difficult to wake, pale in color, irritable, lack of appetite; these are often signs of underlying illness.
- FEVER: temperature of 100 degrees or higher. Child may be sent home without a fever if other symptoms are present. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medications) before they can return to school.
- SORE THROAT: especially with fever and/or swollen glands.
- EYES: discharge, swelling, redness, itchiness, pain, and/or crusting may be signs of conjunctivitis. Medical evaluation may be necessary.
- NASAL DRAINAGE/COUGH: yellow or green nasal drainage, and/or cough, may prevent your child or other students from being able to concentrate. They may expose others to illness, especially if they cannot control their secretions.
- VOMITING/DIARRHEA: Your child must not have any episodes of vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before they can return to school.
- RASH: any rash of unknown cause should be considered contagious. Please have your child examined by a health care provider to determine the cause and communicability of the rash before returning to school. The school may require a note from the health care provider stating that the rash is not contagious.
- COVID: If you have tested your child at home for COVID and the test returned positive, students must stay home for at least 5 days. Please communicate with Nurse Brittney and she can share other specifics around quarantine guidelines from our local Department of Health.
It is not unusual for students to feel great in the morning and then worse as the day goes by. The school is not equipped for prolonged care of your sick student. We require that you or an emergency contact will pick up your sick child within the hour that you are called. Please notify your school of any changes to your emergency contacts, it is important to have a list of available contacts if we are not able to reach you.
Thank you for helping us keep our schools safe and healthy.
COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past week, there have been a total of 4 confirmed cases at our school, but in one of those cases, the person was not at school at all last week. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Cultural Fair
We are so excited to welcome everyone to Cottage Lake Elementary on January 26th from 5-7 pm for our first annual Multi-Cultural Fair. We will have 14 different cultures for you to learn about. Families will get a passport when they arrive and when you visit each table, you will get a special sticker to add to your passport that represents that culture. We will also have performances in the gym put on by various community groups. It is sure to be a rich and fun learning experience! La Riviera Maya food truck will be on site as a dinner option. We hope you can join us!
If you'd like to volunteer to help organize, setup or tear down the event please email culturefair@cottagelakepta.org.
Watch D.O.G.S
Some of you may know that we are launching Watch D.O.G.S. here at Cottage Lake Elementary in January.
Watch D.O.G.S. is a national organization of fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer at least one day during the year in their child's school. Cottage Lake Elementary is thrilled to have partnered with this program and help provide an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security, reduce bullying and provide a greater sense of campus safety allowing students and teachers to focus on learning and instruction. This can only be successful with the help of the ‘Dads’ Of Great Students in our community. Please encourage your spouse, dad, brother, etc to sign up using the following SignUpGenius.
Missoula Children's Theater
We have the amazing opportunity to bring back Missoula Children's Theatre this Spring! Missoula Children's Theater will be at Cottage Lake from April 17-22. This year it will lead about 60 students in the full-length musical comedy, "The Little Mermaid".
If your child thinks they would like to participate, please click here for more information. Please know your child must be available all week along to participate.
An important part of this activity is that we have the opportunity for one or two of our fabulous families to assist in hosting the fabulous directors. If you would like to host one or both of the touring directors or know of someone who would be interested in the accompanist position, please email president@cottagelakepta.org. We are excited to welcome back the Missoula Children's Theater to Cottage Lake this year!
