From the Disciplinary Literacy Team
Attention, Oakland Schools consultants, supervisors, and directors: The Disciplinary Literacy team at Oakland Schools would like to invite you to participate in some shared learning and conversation around connections to your current work. Additionally, we want to keep you updated on the pilot process and statewide implementation of the Disciplinary Literacy Essential Practices for Grades 6-12. Please take a look, RSVP for the collaboration day on September 4, and (as always) let us know if you have any questions.

Hello All!
I thought it’d be helpful to share with everyone in DSS the introduction I sent to the CSI schools I’ll be working with in my grant-funded position. The link below will take you to a Smore that details my background and some ideas I have for the supports/expertise I may be able to offer these schools. I thought it’d also give each of you an initial idea of what I bring to the table.
New Guidance and Counseling Support
Let me know if you think I can complement any of your own work. I’d also like to thank each of you for the warm welcome during my first week.

Legislative Update

Connect.Learn.Transform Book Drive
The Oakland Schools Connect.Learn.Transform task force invites all Oakland Schools employees to donate new and like new books for our Summer Pop-Up Literacy Lab. Equity is the CIP goal focus for Connect.Learn.Transform. 2019, and we are looking to provide equity
in access to books through a book drive.
Who attends the Summer Pop-Up Literacy Lab? What does the Lab consist of?
Pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade students attend Literacy Lab events with their families. The Pop-Up Lab events have weekly themes and include a read-aloud story, science lab, STEM station, and Maker’s crafts. Each Pop-Up concludes with a “little free book fair” so that every child can enhance their home library.
What books would be appropriate to donate?
● Like new books appropriate for pre-Kindergarten through fifth-grade students
● Picture books and chapter books
● Like-new books that are appropriate for older readers are also welcome
I can’t wait to bring in some books. When can I start? Where do I place them?
Now through the end of March! Book collection boxes will be located on each Office Side floor, as well as in the Atrium.
I want to help, but I don’t have any books at home to donate. What can I do?
We compiled a list of top-notch books through Scholastic. Please use this link Scholastic.com/OaklandSchoolsISD .
Reach out to the following members of the CLT Team: Andrea Zellner (DSS), Jenelle Williams (DSS), and Ashelin Currie (DSS) with any questions.
