Putting a Mission into Motion
What do we do with mistakes and frustration from working at the edge?
Using the framework we are discussing during our SEL PD, the outcomes (O) from events (E) arise in our lives are simply feedback on how well your response (R) is working. That’s all it is...feedback as we push forward and take on more complicated, more challenging tasks. There will be mistakes, but those mistakes are simply feedback for improvement. Too often, we take too much credit for success and make excuses for shortcomings. Success, failures, action, or inaction is simply feedback to your response. The hard truth is that your current responses are perfectly designed to get you the outcomes you are currently getting. If you want different outcomes, change your response. Frustration only comes when you lose sight of this model for success. We live in a world where work is required. It takes work, and it takes time to create, achieve, solve, or fix anything. The amount of work and length of time scales with the size of the goal or project. The problems some face are much larger than the ones others have in front of them. That does mean one person may have to work harder for a longer time, but it does not excuse inaction in moving toward the outcome you want. Our wants require us to work at the edge and push ourselves to new levels. Frustration in mistakes or when things do not go as planned is our choice. Choose frustration or choose feedback. One will help you improve at the edge; the other will pull you away from it.
More to come next week -- keep working to put our mission into motion! #FlyAsOne

I read the book referenced in this article this past summer. There is a great deal to be said for ending multitasking and moving to mono-tasking. We live in a very distracted world, and trying to find time for stillness and focus can be very challenging. Take some undistracted time this week to read this conversation with DEEP WORK author Cal Newport. READ NOW
