News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!

Principal's Note...
We have known for years that proper hydration in children and adults promotes optimal cognitive function, mood, and behavior. At MMES, we installed water purification stations throughout the building so that our students can have access to cold, filtered water throughout the day. Here is an excerpt from an article I was reading earlier this week:
Water is a crucial nutrient and hydration is necessary for optimal daily functioning. Water balance is precisely regulated within the body and many methods exist for assessing hydration status. Cognitive performance measures an individual’s attentiveness, critical thinking skills, and memory. Traditionally a 2% or more body water deficit was thought to produce cognitive performance decrements; however, recent literature suggests that even mild dehydration – a body water loss of 1–2% – can impair cognitive performance.
Please be sure that your child has a reusable water bottle to use at our water filtration stations that are located in the lobby and also in the grade 1/2 wing. This way, we can be sure that the students are well-hydrated while being conscious of our environment.
I hope to see you all tonight at the "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader" fundraiser! The funds that are raised will go to defray the cost of the grade 5 activities this year.
Don't forget...no school tomorrow in observation of Veteran's Day. Thank you to all of the veterans out there for your service!
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John

Food Drive
Once again Manchester Memorial's Thanksgiving Food Drive will be led by the 5th grade Student Ambassadors and will run November 13-20. Our drive to support Cape Ann Open Door Food Pantry will have to be fast and furious as Thanksgiving comes early this year. Please have the students place a non-perishable food donation in the box in each classroom. Thank you for your generosity!
Notes From Our Friends
MBTS Master Plan
MBTS citizens… Your input is needed! The work on the Town’s new Master Plan is entering a critical phase and the committee has a final survey that residents are urged to fill out on line. A large response rate is essential to ensure that we are capturing the collective viewpoint of the community. This is important as the Master Plan will prescribe specific action steps that will shape the look and feel of the community for years to come as well as influence the financial resources we have available going forward.

We also ask that you join us at the Master Plan Community Forum on Tuesday, December 5th from 6-8 PM at the MERHS where survey results, and preliminary Master Plan recommendations will be presented for community discussion and response.

Help Wanted!
We are currently searching to bolster our substitute pool for the 17-18 school year. Many of our favorite substitutes have gotten full-time jobs recently (hooray for them), and we need to "restock our bullpen." Do you know someone locally who has experience working with children in a school setting? Please have them email Mrs. Dodge directly at dodgec@mersd.org and we can take them through the application and screening process. Thanks so much in advance!
