Qualifications of Congressmen and Job Expectations
Representatives have to be 30 years or older, Citizens of the United States of America for nine years or more, and residents of the state they represent.
Meeting Times of Congress
They usually meet in December and end in May. The first sessions of Congress were held in New York City, and then in Philadelphia. After the first session of the Sixth Congress, the meeting moved to Washington, D.C. where it has taken place ever since.
Powers Granted to Them
- Pass ex post facto laws, which outlaw acts after they have already been committed.
- Pass bills of attainder, which punish individuals outside of the court system.
- Suspend the writ of habeas corpus, a court order requiring the federal government to charge individuals arrested for crimes.
How Does a Bill Become a Law
The bill has to be passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate it has to be passed by the president and if it is the bill becomes a law
