TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL. 4 NO. 3
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
WEEK ENDING IN 8/27/2021
Dear OSES Family Members,
Our students are finally getting settled this school year. Overall, I am proud of our student body and how quickly they have adapted to the classroom. The teachers and staff have done a great job with logistics. Now it’s time to learn!
Thank you to everyone who attend our COVID Q and A session this week. I found it productive for all who attended, including parents, staff, and students. Handling the pandemic is a community effort and I am thankful that each person is doing their part. A link to the document that was reviewed will be available soon, please remember it is a working document and subject to change as needed:
You may be aware that our district updated their mask policy. We thank our families that over 95% of the students are coming to the school with masks. At this time, Orlando Science Schools will continue with the current mask policy in place. In addition, there were further developments today (Friday). As of today, we are reviewing these developments and waiting for them to transpire.

FIRST
First grade is diving into the curriculum with Studies Weekly. This week students learned about the Pledge of Allegiance, Labor Day, and our Flag. Did you know that our first flag had only 13 stars and stripes and today our flag has 50 stars to represent the 50 states?
We will continue iReady diagnostics next week. Please continue to ensure your child gets a good night's rest.
First grade teachers are picking up classes from the cafeteria at 8 am daily and have specials in the morning every Wednesday. Please be sure your child arrives on time with all of their belongings. We are noticing at dismissal many students are forgetting their water bottles or lunch boxes in the classroom or at clubs, please do not come back in the building to get them, you are holding up our car line. Your child will have to visit lost and found the next day. Sorry, for the inconvenience.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Thank you and have a great weekend!

We are also exploring the properties of light and shadows in our science classes and learning how to use a map in social studies!
Please remember to send headphones and a computer mouse with your child to have at school! We will be using them throughout the school year.

THIRD
Science
In Science, the students will be learning about matter and its properties. This will include naming the three states of matter, how they change from one state to another, and giving examples of each state.
Reading
We are diving into “Focus Reading Comprehension Strategies” like Summarizing & Making Inferences! We will learn about: Characters and their traits, motivations, and contributions to the story. We will also learn about the sequence of events.
Math
The students will be reviewing place value to prepare them to round to the nearest 10 or 100. Continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts each night.
Writing
We are going to begin our “How-To” writing workshop! We are going to explore the wonders of writing fundamentals and creativity.
FOURTH
We’ve been working on place value, solving expressions, map skills, and exploring the world of science. This includes developing curiosity about the world around us and using research to answer our questions.
We have started IReady diagnostics and will conclude testing next week. Results will be shared with families within the next few weeks.
We are in need of the following recess donations: jump ropes, chalk, and a soccer ball.
FIFTH
SIXTH
Mrs. Gajus’ math classes have spent the first couple weeks of school getting to know each other. We participated in a variety of activities where students were able to review previously taught math concepts, all while learning about their classmates. This week, students took their first benchmark assessment. This assessment is meant to show the teacher and school what concepts the students are already familiar with in their grade level, and to inform instruction throughout the year.
In their English classes, students have spent the first few weeks getting to know each other and our classroom. They have also learned the rules and procedures for using Chromebooks and have logged into their Google classrooms. Last week, students spent a few days completing their English benchmark assessment which helps show the teachers what the students already know so we can better tailor our lessons. We are currently learning all about the elements of a story and diagramming plots with Pixar shorts!
SPECIALS
In Character Education, we have begun talking about our September Character Trait of the month which is empathy. We talked about how empathy is different from sympathy and how we can be empathetic. For the younger grades, we have started talking about what it means to be courteous and polite.
This week in Art class we talked about color and color theory. We looked at the work of artists Keith Haring and Henri Matisse and began working on projects inspired by the artists. Younger students learned about primary and secondary colors, then students used them in a drawing. We had fun reading books together and watching videos showing the artists at work!
This week in the STEM Lab we explored tools and tech used in Science and STEM.
