Staff Stuff
March 25, 2014
Spring?? Only the calendar can tell.
Just a couple of updates:
- New stuff -- EasyBib trial and SciFinder
- Assessment
- Art
New stuff
We are doing a Free Trial for EasyBib for the rest of the semester. It turns out that there were over 3000 hits on the free version from our IP range, so we are looking at it to see about the benefits of the extra features.
The Library Committee met last month, and in that conversation Joanna Webb (Chemistry faculty) mentioned that what they really needed was SciFinder. Long story short --- it was affordable, we subscribed, working out all of the technology bugs, and the chemistry faculty is doing a happy dance. Loop closed.
If you have questions about these, ask Beth.

Assessment Update
We haven't received our feedback from the Assessment Council as of yet from the program review. When I get that, I will share it with all of you.
Meanwhile, I spent two full days thinking and talking about nothing but assessment last week in D.C. The good news is that we are actually not that far behind at all - in fact we are doing even better than many. The other news (not necessarily bad) is that I still have a lot of work to do, and you will probably still be hearing from me as I sort through all of the notes I took during that meeting. There is hope on the assessment horizon. And we are beyond blessed to be working here at WVWC and not at a giant mega-university. (My opinion there). :-)

Art
One way that we have been contributing to student learning (note the assessment thinking here) is to work with our Art Department in the commissioning of some pieces. There will be two in L105 at some point, and a fantastic new piece outside of the Rare Book Room. We have some very talented students!!!! The pieces in L105 will have some sort of information literacy - information in the world theme. I can't really describe it from memory. The one upstairs will depict Abraham Lincoln as a solitary scholar.
