McAllister - "What Makes You Say That?" Routine
What Makes you Say That
- Gives the kids the responsibility of exploring the topic.
- Use in any subject
- When students give a hypothesis or idea ask the question “what makes you say that?”
- Push for elaboration
- Goes beyond a simple answer and provides evidence and reasoning.
Auxier/Baumgardner - 4Cs
4 C's
- Similar to 4 A’s but allows students the opportunity to make connections.
- Use with any “meatier” type of text.
- Connections, challenges (questions), changes, concepts
- What connections can you make between the content and your own knowledge?
Atupem - Step Inside
Step Inside
- Purpose is to put themselves in the situation and imagine themselves within.
- Select video, audio, text, artwork
- Imagine themselves inside the situation
- Ask what they observe, understand, believe, care about question
Burton - Tug of War
Tug of War
- Analyze a bigger complex issue or a topic that the students see as oversimplified or black and white.
- They create tugs for different point of views to put on a rope or line across classroom. This encourages multiple supports and reasoning
- Different reasons can be stronger or weaker than other reasons, so these would be put near anchor or saved for last.
